Is anyone using a joystick for controlling the Marklin 7051 crane. If so could you let me know the brand and model number.

Thanks/Mike

Hi Mike,

I just use an old joystick from a Commodore 64.

Bought a male connector from the local electronics store,

https://www.jaycar.com.a...e-idc-connector/p/PP0802

and wired up as per diagram into the plugs for the Märklin controller so I can use either.

Works a treat :-)

Good question. I have exactly the same idea for the Crane on our club exhibition layout which is designed for the public (kids) to use to control the Crane.

I got a Joystick mechanism from an Arcade Game company some years ago and have made it available for use with our crane (must follow that up).

For our needs a heavy-duty one is required and this fits the bill perfectly....

But for home use where the demands won't be so high a Computer Joystick may be fine. Be careful that some PC joysticks don't use x-y switches but rather they have variable potentiometers which would not be suitable for use with the Crane.

let us know the result of your solution :-)

Cheers

Steve

If you guys want to get really serious you could use a joystick with pots, and just use hobby servo control boards to operate the motors.
That would give you smooth variable speed control.
God i cant wait til i have a house to start building this stuff again.
LOLOLOL they are just toys, grow up and play with them.

Thanks David for your reply and diagram. Is it possible for you to share any photos you of your wire connections to the joystick?

Hi Mike,

This is the setup I have,

7051 Joystick Setup.jpg

Sorry, not the neatest wiring and I don't follow the "normal" conventions as I usually use Cat 5/6 cable - easy to rout and plenty of available pairs.

As per the original joystick diagram (male DB9 type connector) ,

C64 Wiring.png

and the diagram for the 7170 switchblock

Marklin 7071 Wiring Diagram.PNG

I wired as below

Joystick Position 1 = 7170 Red left (up)
Joystick Position 2 = 7170 Red right (down)
Joystick Position 3 = 7170 Black left (anticlockwise turn)
Joystick Position 4 = 7170 Black Right (clockwise turn)
Joystick Position 5 = Blank
Joystick Position 6 = 7170 Yellow (electromagnet on/off)
Joystick Position 7 = Blank
Joystick Position 8 = 7170 Yellow (side of switchblock to transformer)
Joystick Position 9 = Blank

Hope this helps,

Happy Days, David

PS : My joystick is labelled Epyx 500 XJ by Konix but any of this type should work fine.
PPS : If you really wanted to go flash and build something in, you could consider the following type of joystick which would be readily available from local electronic stores

Hi David. If I buy the JayCar joy stick, I am wondering how you turn the Marklin 7051 magnet on and off with the joy stick.

Hi Mike,

You would need to wire in a separate "fire" button,

https://www.jaycar.com.a...ed-illumination/p/SP0666

I'm sure you would be able to find similar suppliers as below in US that could supply you the total package if you want to go down the route of having something built-in. I still like using the Märklin 7170 control box but the joystick works well for my grandson.
