I am thinking about how to build my new layout in a way that makes it ready for computer control or advanced control station use, so I am creating blocks with contact tracks. In my pre-digital days I had set up a yard for automatic running using relays, so a train would make the contact in a contact track which would switch the switch behind it and/or cut the power to the block behind it.

I am moving to digital control of my trains (still using my trusty old Uhlenbrock Intellibox, but thinking of upgrading) - the question is what should I do for the turnouts and blocks?

Hi Sten,

With PC control and use of occupancy detectors there is absolutely no need for relays like in a analogue setup.

The PC software will do everything that is needed from controlling the turnouts to starting and stopping trains. And if you are worried about additional safety aspects, like ability to cut power from a siding, there is ways in the software to build in additional safety monitoring to ensure no runaway trains gets started.

I fully agree with Lasse
Digital train control with a PC allows:
- cheaper design by having signal on visible portion only
- allowing shuttle operation with proper train stopping on blocks even when loco is behind
- avoiding problems caused by insulated sections: wagon lights off , old locos with Alzeimer
- avoiding MFX registration issues
- simple management of two way track signals
And many more

Yes it is by far the best solution and won't even cost you anything if you choose Rocrail (though other paid products may be simpler and/or better support)

I don't get the message anymore as it has been quarantined, maybe your firewall silently does it.

My alert history says "We've safely aborted connection to cabin-layout.mixox.com because it was infected with JS:Downloader-FJP(Trj)."

No, if the firewall sees it, I don't get to see any of the web page, but I could see Dales one fine.

I think your system is being over sensitive and telling porkies.

My website is hosted on the Google owned blogspot system and I cannot add javascript myself to it. It would be very very surprising if it was hosting a trojan.

A quick search shows that avast give false positive alerts for that trojan.
