Cool

Found on Danish "Baneforum.dk" and Dutch "Forum.3.rail.nl"; apparently Märklin is ( almost ) making
the MFX-protocol open for all competitors, AND making a work-group to test and secure that all MFX-compatible
equipment works perfectly as it should.

https://forum.3rail.nl/index.php?topic=74732.0

https://baneforum.dk/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3149

The competitors are only allowed to have 16 functions available, so that Märklin can be the only one offering 32 functions.

That is great.
I bought the Roco BR85 with dynamic smoke, at the time with a Zimo DCC decoder, later when it was ready, was delivered the one supporting mfx, for free. It works just wonderful. I think that for future upgrades this decoder will surpass by far the ESU ones ( we have to wait to fully see the new LS ) for people wanting mfx in their machines.

Oh rats, have to log in to download the relevant document from the first website.

Bit confusing that they are using the same software with the same colour scheme as stummi's forum ...

My latest Piko lok came with an MFX decoder. Was wondering how they were able to do that.

Hello Alan

found another source, but unfortunately in German this blog. But it has a different colour.Smile

https://www.spur-g-blog....n-oeffnet-mfx-protokoll/

But this post is signed by "Quelle: Eric-Michael Peschel / Gebr. Märklin & Cie. GmbH". Probabely a Märklin employee?! So it must be correct.

Even Märklin has set up another special logo for foreigners producing mfx products. It is named "FITS mfx", which shall tell you, Märklin has tested and certified the comparability of this product to equal for Märklin mfx products.

I was searching for this Märklin press information, but in German I only found this article at the "spur-g-blog.de" website. Interesting to see it at 3rails, etc. as well.ThumpUp

Best Regards

Wolfgang

Not really because the patent protection in Germany is for 18 years. So I guess this patent has been run out.

Only Märklin can sell you a MFX-decoder Smile

Piko can sell you a SmartDecoder 4.1 PluX22 compatible to MFX, just as ESU can sell you a decoder with M4. Smile

They have always been able to and allowed to do this by back-engineering the MFX-protocol; but not allowed to use the mfx®-name. Smile

Now Märklin gives them the full protocol, to make sure the equipment is 100% compatible with MFX. Smile

I wonder if this is a reaction to the capabilities of Railcom auto registration.

After almost everyone has mfx-compatible decoders, this move must have taken Maerklin so much courage!

This stupid limitation to 16 functions means that nothing will actually change. If you buy 3rd party decoders you should use DCC to get the 28 functions.

If you ask me, the reason for this move is probably the new Piko SmartDecoder. From what I heard it has quite some issues with mfx. This new "fits mfx" label is probably supposed to prevent it from tarnishing mfx.
