Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me what type of metal current Marklin locos are made with for the body?
I need to drill and tap some holes in my BR42.90 (39161) to secure a HLA motor so it would be good to know what I'm working with.

Hello,

I believe they are diecast Zinc or an alloy made primarily of Zinc. You should have no problem drilling and tapping with Zinc.

All the best,

Paul

Hello

Actually the name of the material is Zamac or Zamak, it is an alloy of zinc with aluminum, magnesium and copper.

In internet and in the wikipedia there is enough information about it.

It is a very specific zinc alloy. Its when the alloy isn't properly made (wrong proportions or conditions) I think that the zinkpest issue arises. But in general , its zinc, and a workable material.
