Impressive. Thanks for the link!
(That amtrak 451 is now on my wish list. Maybe we'll see it in the 2015 Märklin catalog...)

Thanks for the link and postcard, Per.

I can see that even a large California layout do not represent a huge investment in trees !

BTW, Alberto should give a help for the pictures on that website ...

Hello friends. Surfing around i found this, have a look:

http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=87546

This looks like it's the layout in the San Diego Model Railroad museum: http://www.sdmodelrailroadm.com/
It's open to the public and they have multiple layouts of different scale including 3-rail O scale "Toy Train" (classic Lionel, MTH, etc). But alas no Marklin.

If you ever get to San Diego and have a chance, by all means visit the Model Railroad Museum. The layouts are actually run by local model clubs but are in a public location with visitors. Nice idea, and that it's open to the public gets others to experience and appreciate the hobby. As we all know, once you start to play a bit, you're infected. Good way to keep the hobby alive. Interested visitors can decide to join one of the clubs to help on the layout and keep it going.

I don't live in San Diego, but was there several years ago and struck up a conversation with one of the people working there. He invited me back to tour the entire Tehachapi Pass Layout (the one in the pictures, also http://www.sdmodelrailro....com/tehachapi_pass.html ). I got to run some of the trains and see the operation from all sides. The size is impressive as is the level of detail. It is modeled on an area just outside of San Diego where trees are sparse so it is prototypical.

What was great was that it wasn't just older men - at least when I visited they had younger kids there (~10 to teens) both visiting and working some of layouts.

David
