All aboard for an update on Big Boy #4014! A year after it was towed from California to Union Pacific's railroad repair facility in Wyoming, Nebraska Stories revisits the largest steam locomotive in the world for an update on its restoration.

The restoration is now well along and the 4014 is on schedule to run this year in time for the 150 year celebration of the completion of the US transcontinental RR. The front engine was removed and rebuilt, and lots of boiler work was done to get it back to spec. UP's incredible attention to detail on the boiler structure and all of the internal mechanisms ensures that this beauty will run for years! It will be amazing to see this monster loco back on the rails and running under steam, which might first happen in just a few months if things go well.

Here is a fairly recent update, and there are more videos on their restoration progress on UP's youtube channel.

Regards,
Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

Hi all.
Let's hope we see this for real one day at Dale Junction on Sherman Hill.

Restored oil burning 4014 heads west on track 2 while FEF 444 heads east.
Challenger 3985 waits on track 3 to follow 4014 east.
Staged on my "Dale Junction" layout.

Regards, Colin.

There is a lot of new progress on the 4014 restoration and it remains on schedule to run this year! Union Pacific is really doing this restoration right and they don't appear to be taking any shortcuts. This beauty should be set to run for years once it gets back onto the track!

Check out the latest update video from UP:
