Hi, will the ESU Ecos system run older Marklin digital decoders?

Yes, ECoS is multi-protocol and supports DCC, MFX (M4), and Marklin Motorola.

anything to do with digital the ECoS will do the job, furthermore you can also use your old 6021 or mobile unit as an extra controller

I have found some exceptions with Gauge 1.

The 58115 only works fully with a 6021, I could not access functions beyond simple speedometer without using a 6021 switched to the lower data rate.

And some very early DCC type decoders will not work with the ECoS hybrid data on the track. They run perfectly on a lokprogrammer and pure DCC but the ECoS hybridised output confuses them.

But this is only in Gauge 1 but I believe may affect some HO cars with functions such as 4999, 4998, 2681 and the 7651 digital crane as the 6021 handbook warns to make them work your 6021 must be have Universal switch settings and possibly the ECoS does not produce an output they would recognise. But an HO modeller could correct me.

The ECoS has a special "Motorola 14 fx" mode for items like the 4999 and 4998 cars.
The Central Station 60212 was an ECoS in disguise and in my experience the ECoS produces a highly compatible track signal.

Maybe you would have needed that special mode for your gauge I item, too.

There are some DCC decoders that do not fully adhere to the NMRA standard and that get confused by multi-protocol track signals.

Tom

Thank-you for that, I suspect the early Gauge 1 DCC type decoders are not entirely NMRA compliant although they cope with a pure DCC waveform the mixed one is too much to ask.

Not an HO problem though as you guys got to start with the Motorola system from the outset I believe.

I'll try the 14 fx setting with the 58115, that's useful to know.

I have had Loksound decoders go into slow steady speed just running mode as soon as power is applied to the track giving every impression the decoder has died in both a XL V4 and a Marklin installed ESU OEM decoder and they needed to be put on a track with pure DCC or Marklin data to return to proper functionality. It may be turning off AC and DC compatibility would help that reoccuring.

I think the ECoS is a wonderful piece of kit and I run decoders of various vintages and protocols with it and 99% of the time all is well but you are right standards have evolved over the last 30 years and its a big ask for all of the decoders to respond correctly all of the time.

You can guarantee when you are away from home at an exhibition these little wrinkles will come out to bite you, not when you are in the garden chilling with a large Gin.

But that's what the battery powered radio controlled V100 is for.

Can the 4998,4999 work with 6021 Control unit, CS2/CS3?

60212 CS1 and ECOS controller?

These two items should work with a CU 6021, they should work with a CS 60212, and also with an ECoS.
I don't know if they should work with CS2 or CS3.

Both work with CS2 60213 as I use.
