One of my friends is circumavigating the planet in his Nordhavn 52 trawler.
Quite an adventure in itself, but along the way he checks a few railroads related attractions too.

After checking NZ and Tasmania, he also recently went for a ride on the famous Flamsbana.
Maybe one day Märklin will give us a Flamsbana version of the NSB Re460 and the nice set of coaches!
His report is here

Enjoy!

The Flamsbana is certainly on my bucket list.

However it does begin to worry me - you see it featured on all those railway travel programmes that I so love to watch and has an obvious attraction to more than simply rail enthusiasts. I have noticed recent coverage the trains are simply totally packed and crowded past the point of comfort and Norway is not a cheap place to visit

I don't know if there is an AC version of the set, but the lok must exist in AC somewhere, either OEM or as a huetschentausch.

My friend was very happy to be there early in the season.
No crowd.
Of course he lives on board his boat and has all the freedom needed with his schedule.
Maybe that's the ticket?
Cheers

I have a NMJ AC version of the loco, which I bought at the little shop in Flam.. Sadly, the loco is no where near Marklin quality and the plastic gears inside the bogie are stripped after only a few hours of use..

We did our trip in January - simply awesome...

Hi,
For a sea-going vessel, I would think the quiet fjiords of Norway would be a welcome relief.
Sounds like a great life.

Anyway, like Adrian we visited the Flamsbana in the dead of winter with train about half-full.
We were not disappointed. It snowed during the journey, and came down heavily at Myrdal at the top.

Our locomotive is shown here, and I am sure Maerklin do a model of this (same number, but not in this livery).
They still use the green carriages, but no longer use the older style locomotive.

Yes they both love that.
They had a few epic crossings, including a two week "toss around, shake and bake" passage on the North Atlantic from New England to Ireland, or a 3800 nM + crossing from St Helena to Barbados, and a very unusal crossing of the Tasman sea with an unusual flat sea and beautiful calm weather!
They have lived on board this boat since 2010.
Their blog is a wonderful way to travel vicariously...

ROCO have the loco in AC-version with sound, and they are running great. The carriages are available from the manufacture NMJ (http://www.nmj.eu). ROCO also made a set with one loco and 3 carriages, in both AC and DC, I believe the AC-version has been sold out, it have the art.nr: 61453.
