Hi Marklin Friends,

On eBay-DE another interesting rarity. Why a black R 700 was painted by Marklin with "LMS" lettering for England I am not sure, but we know this item was originally produced by Marklin because it appears in catalogs.

https://rover.ebay.com/r...XlK%26autorefresh%3Dtrue

The yellow inner cable and silver KK look like a year of production from 1938. The stamp on tender for "LMS" could be original, but there are known new stamps from paint artists like this one here (next to an original):

Looking forward to your thoughts and comments...

Kind regards,

I no authority on Märklin especially the older items but to my eye the engine looks to be in much poorer shape than the tender. Doesn't seem that they spent their whole "life" together.

Hi Paul,
this coach is definitivly a fake.
When my loco was photographed for the new mikado i was aware that this would happen.
I show you a real SLMS Coach...
It was mostly delivered with an R 800.
All the best Stefan

Thanks for your comments, I agree too that the tender is in too good of condition to be with the loco.

Stefan the one you have pictured is interesting... I have only seen one black LMS tender that looked original to me, I believe it was from a seller in Spain many years ago. He also had a red SLR tender from the "hellrot" special series. I only bought the red tender and not the LMS one, I wish I had.

I feel that you are right, the LMS black tender is more commonly with the BK (loop coupler) for the R 800 loco.

The R 700 S LMS shown in the Mikado Katalog is interesting...because the R 700 LMS with the red color frame is mostly likely from 1936-1937 but with the tender with silver BK is 1940, correct? ...possibly 1939? Mikado is a wonderful resource but there are several instances of incorrect models shown and restored items that are not described as such. As always one should form their own opinions and not fully rely on any single source.

Best,

Paul

I am also curious if this model was for export to Britain or a novelty item for domestic market in Germany?

As we know LMS locos were sold in Germany and the box label stamped "braun" instead of "LMS" ... I noticed Stefan's loco if indeed original has the stamp "D" which I believe in this case refers to local sales within Germany (Deutschland).

Best,

Paul

Hi Paul
I am quit sure that the loco was sold in germany
-the box is original with the loco.
A lot of the locos that were not exported came back / never left/ but than were changed quit peculiar. The “grün“ or “braun“ stamped boxes often had tenders that were repainted. In some cases even new stamps - with different design! - were added.
The SLMS loco we photographed for the Micado has a wrong frame - it was on restauration - original „Märklin“ in the 80 - sorry but these times they didn‘t care for such details.

Hi Paul,

The black colour is meant to represent the goods livery of the LMS. Only passenger locos received the more well-known red livery.
