I'm thinking about how to improve control on my analogue layout.

I am pondering the use of 6699

I don't seem to be able to find a lot of info so a few questions:

Is it as simple as it looks?

Am I correct in assuming it is run off the yellow and brown from any transformer? For example 6611/6631/6647?

Does it a have a reverse function?

Is control a significant improvement on a blue 6631 or white 6647?

As a second stage I am also thinking about the use of 6600 but from what I have read it seems rather delicate. Any comments?

Hi Michael,

Yes, the 6699 is connected to yellow and brown of another transformer and ist as simple as it looks. Yes, it has a reverse - function. Older locos with flat commutators really run better and smoother, at modern locos with drum-commutators the difference is not really big. At low speeds some locos get louder, you can hear the buzz of the frequency of the power-supply.
What you read about the 6699 is also valid for 6600: Never try to run locos with decoders. It kills decoders.
At least the 3371 ICE also doesn't work with the 6600.
If you get it for a few Pounds, try it. But don't spend much money.

Hi Marcus,

Many thanks, this certainly helps. I assume that the speed controller on 6600 is the same as that on 6699?

All my engines are older, with flat commutators except for an old A/C Rivarossi BR 10 002...I haven't a clue what is in there.

I take your point about money, these things seem quite costly and rarely come with any form of guarantee. I will start looking.

Hi Michael,

There are some electronic differences. While the 6699 works with DC and pulse width modulation, the 6600 has a phase controlled modulator. But that is not important for use.

In auctions on ebay - Germany the 6699 often sells between 2 and 5 EUR. Don't be impressed by "buy it now" - offers with fantastic prices.

So, am I right in assuming that anything that is analogue but has a so called 'electronic' reversing system is not compatible with 6699 / 6600?

Examples I have come across are two crocs 3352, 3556 and also 3142, there must be plenty of others from the late '80s.

Hi Michael,

No, there are no known issues with these electronics. When the 6699 came out in 1978 it was especially advertised and sold for the new class 38 in 1-gauge which was the first engine in the assortment with an electronic reverse unit. BTW: 3142 has no electronics.

The 6600 was sold until 1986. In that year already a number of locos with an electronic reverse unit in H0 were offered, starting with 3309 (class 85) in 1983.

Sorry John, my error, I have an FS addiction that can cause problems at times! 3142 is on my wish list.

I meant 3351 the SBB 3/6.
