I want to download and use the ESU sound file 76457 (EMD 16cyl 710G3B SD60E (FT) to use on my Marklin loco. Currently it has limited functions and not great sound file. What do I need to do to change this and what is a guestimate cost for it? Can I do this my self ?
Thanks!
DrBob

DrBob, first question is are you sure you have a ESU decoder in that loco? If so which decoder are you using? Depending on that will determine which file you will download. Do you have a Lok Programmer to perform this job?

Drbob, I must apologize for my above comment. I did the typical male thing & read one word "Pennsylvania" & flew right into it thinking I was dealing with a GG1. I should read the whole thread before commenting. But you are in good hands with Mike & John & others. Sorry for confusing the issue.

Cheers

Dave...

Out of the box, that model (PRR F7 or FP7) consists of two A units and a B unit.
Older versions had the sound module mounted behind the main decoder unit and wires to the speaker inside the B unit.
I don't know if this model has the same design.
If yes, using ESU or other sound would require replacing both the Marklin MFX decoder and the sound module or simply replacing the sound module and using an ESU decoder for sound only.

If you do decide to change decoders, you will need ESU 76411(16cyl 567BC) or 74436 (16cyl 567C) or 76446 (16cyl 567B).
For more realistic sound, you could install separate decoders in each A unit and have sound coming from each one.

Aha, you would like it to sound like this, I get it, I got it, it sounds so good thanks to ESU!

If my memory is correct it is 76457 (EMD 16cyl 710G3B SD60E (FT) But knowing me it might be another.

DrBob, you go to the ESU website under download sound files and you will find a great selection of American sound files, these sound files are only available for American users, you've got a selection of 76 different sound files for locos.

they are called: LokSound Select Retail Soundfiles

http://projects.esu.eu/p...rder=date&country=us

or you have another choice of ESU American sound files for factory equipped locos.

http://projects.esu.eu/projectoverviews/6

equipped with ESU full throttle feature (must use Lokprogrammer to program this feature)

I would suggest the: Dual EMD 12cyl 567C (FT) (ESU 73483 or 75461) used on E3, E4. E5, E6, E7, E8, E9

ESU 75461: As with all SELECT decoders there are up to 16 separate horns, 2 separate brake squeals and 2 bells included on this one sound profile!

regards.,

Some dealers upload a sound of your choice when you buy a new ESU decoder. Most likely the loco needs a new decoder anyway, unless it was already converted to ESU LokSound decoders.
With an ESU LokProgrammer you can upload the sound yourself.

Some folks install two decoders if the loco has two motors. This will increase the costs, but sound and running characteristics will be better.

In the best case you only need a LokSound Select decoder with the correct sound installed.
It will be more expensive if you buy two ESU LokSound and a LokProgrammer.

A LokProgrammer is a good investment IMO if you intend to convert more locos in the future.

Tom

Only use the Select decoders if you don't want to change the sounds in the sound file. You are much better off using a V4 decoder. Also I am not sure if they make an M4 version of the Select, which you may want to use if running mfx.

No M4 for Select sound decoders

all new decoders bought from ESU are either V4.0 or M4

there is a difference between ESU Germany and USA, ESU Germany produces a few American locos with M4 protocol but the rest of American locos are sold under the ESU select banner only for America, who ever imports them into Europe (dealer) has to buy it from ESU USA.

the difference is also they are all individual sound recordings, so no generic motor sounds as you will find out when you go through the select sound file pages.

with a Lokprogrammer you have a choice of 4 extra airhorns (Leslie, Wabco, Nathan and MISC air horns), 21 different diesel bells, 16 different motor sounds and 35 different whistles which all appear in the sound library (loksound template pack 1.9)

if you need more information contact ESU LLC:
