If you wanted to buy just one and were only interested in Marklin HO up to around 1990 and you weren't particularly bothered about up to date values which volume would you choose?

Honestly I’d look for 2015, it’s going to be cheap since 2016 is out and you stand a good chance to find it on clearance, and it will well and truly cover the time frame you want. With older versions you run the risk of paying more IMHO

Not to mention that any errors and omissions (the famous E&OE) will have been well and truly picked up Blink

Hi Michael,

I would buy something cheap from the 1990s. These catalogues have multiple errors, but these are even not corrected two decades later regarding models before 1990. So you can save much money.

Regards

Markus

Are these errors documented anywhere Markus?, that would be an interesting reference.

Given how much they charge for these books you would expect their research to be updated as and when required.

Hi Cookee,

No, I don't know any documentation. It seems that Mr. Koll once closed his work on the older models and is not willing even to correct obvious errors. Some classics still confuse collectors until today: e.g. the 4698 Swiiss covered goods-car with inscription 23101 J3d which Koll dates 1979. That wagon was never delivered. But at Koll it even has a price.

Another endless story is the 3021 / V200 with the inscription "DEUTSCHE BUNDESBAHN" and the number "V200 056". This is shown in the catalogue 1963 on page 9. And in the KOLL. But it was never delivered.

Regards

Markus

Michael - I have the soft cover versions from 2006 and they have served me well for the past couple of years. Since I don't collect any items newer than 2006 I thought that a more recent publication of Koll's was unnecessary until I was talking with a collector friend who referred to a version "00" and "01" of a 1950's freight wagon (314S I believe) that appears in his 2015? edition. These versions were NOT in my 2006 catalog. So, based on this information I deduce that there sometimes are additions and corrections to older items.

I decided to splurge and order the new 2018 catalog. Since I like to support small businesses I tried to purchase the catalog directly from Koll's (their webstore), but I was surprised when I received an email from them stating that they don't ship to the USA. www.amazon.de, however, now has it is stock (click here for link) and will ship for FREE if you have a "Prime" account. Even if you don't have "Prime" you can get a 30 day trial and cancel it prior to the end of the 30 days in the event that you don't plan to purchase many items online. In the end my price for the hardcover version totaled less with shipping included than the price I would have paid directly from Koll's. Shipping time is listed at about 8-10 days to the USA.

Good luck

Kurt

Do you tend to keep your back-issues or sell them and only use the latest one?

Hi Cookee,

I still have a few back-issues: usually, I'll pick up the Kompakt version, as I don't really need the photos (and rely on a back issue for that). I also pick up the Spezial Katalog from time to time.
