Gentlemen (and Ladies)

I got the chance to unbox my new Piko Ae 4/7 this evening. After a hectic day, I thought it would be nice to have a few minutes of model time.
The first impression is very nicely detailed. The model has a nice weight and runs very smoothly. I only had a chance to test it on my test track using my aging 6021.
The model comes with a Zimo PluX22 decoder, which seems to respond well to commands.
I will have to read the instructions to see what functions are available beyond F4.
The Lok has Swiss lighting changeover, with 3 white LEDs in the front and one on the lower right at the rear. The lights are bright and give off a good headlight type illumination. There is other LEDs to light the corridor passage inside the locomotive. With the 6021, this is controlled by the function button, simultaneously with the headlights. The instructions mention interior lights, so it may be possible to assign a separate function.

The pantographs are very fine and look a little delicate for an AC model. I do not know if the model can be operated from the catenary. These details certainly appear finer than the Hag and Liliput models.

I am planning to operate this lok in front of a short composition of Era III passenger coaches, a mix of lightsteel and EWI coaches from the period 1965-1968.
I remember these loks running on the south shore of the Zuerichsee (Lake of Zurich) pulling trains from Zuerich HB to Pfaeffikon, Ziegelbruecke, Sargans and as far as Chur. On our trips from Zuerich to Richterswil, the trains were often made up of rebuilt heavy steel coaches like Roco's 44200A/44465. I may try to source one or two additional to complete such a consist. I don't remember if those local trains had first class cars. Maybe I can find some photos at polier.ch that would refresh my memory.

Based on my initial impressions, if you are looking for an Ae 4/7, this model is worth it.
As usual, I will post some photos when I can.

Regards

Mike C

Mike, I've got a Piko electric loco but the pantographs on mine aren't connected, there is actually no connection between the pantographs and the circuitboard., bit of a shame

Thanks Mike!
I had seen it in Göppingen last September during the IMA, but it was in a display case.
Now it is clear from the video that it's a good "runner" with decent tractive power.
But how about the build quality (essentially the body and small plastic details) ?
Equivalent to (recent) ROCO productions?
Thanks

I read in one of the German forums that a few buyers had problems with parts detaching when the model was removed from the box.
I did not have any problems with mine. At the moment, the lok is in one of my display cases.

This is my second Piko locomotive, the other being the BLS/RM Flirt type trainset. My overall impression is very good. The appearance is up there with most of my other models, including Maerklin, Roco, Hag and the new LSM Bm4/4.
Due to the presence of small detail like free standing handrails, etc, this model probably has to be handled with more care than say a Br 185 or Re 4/4.

Treat it as you would a Krok or any other model that needs to be handled with care.
