Hi all,

I've made my Thanksgiving Holiday project here in the USA the assembling of some consists amongst the loose SBB Eurofima Coaches I've assembled over the years. Can anyone help me match cars to each other based on eras to form sets? It would be much appreciated! Part numbers for the jigsaw puzzle are below LOL

Seemingly complete sets:
4367
43670
43672

Partial Sets:
42166

Dining Cars:
4217 in red
42171 mitropa in purpla
42172 red
42173 red with "eleventino" logo
42173 Gas kitchen w/o pantograph. (I'm guessing ideal for the 43672 which if I remember right is not a completely-electrified route pulled by diesel partway? Or just stick in the 42166?)
HAG 751-9 Coop dining car. (may not match these, but does anyone know if the length on the HAG EW diners matches the Roco/Lima/HAG coaches?)

Loose Cars Green:
4215
4216
4236 (both versions)
42151
42162
42163

Loose Cars Orange/blue:
4182 TEN sleeper
4162 (x4) Orange
4267 orange
4268 blue

Loose Cars Grey IC livery or other:
4366 "chameleon" coach in grey
41896 cisalpino
43526 ricola coach

Perhaps we make puzzle number 2 matching the locos...

Have a great holiday all!

I think that we can start with the simple ones:

43672

This set represents a Eurocity consist on the Stuttgart-Zuerich route, made up of SBB EC coaches. Such a consist would normally be hauled by a Re 4/4II between Singen and Zurich via Schaffhausen and Winterthur.
If using the same set to represent another EC, you may choose to add a restaurant (42173 or 42174) or the panorama coach 43650.1 (Gotthard Panorama Express) or from the 43671 set.

4367

This was the original SBB Eurocity Consist set, which could be used to create a generic SBB EC of the period around 1995. I have seen a few photos of a consist with two panorama coaches, including occasional use in the EC Transalpin to Vienna. The appropriate locomotive for a generic EC would be a green or red Re 6/6, Re 4/4II or any Re 460. I only use one of the two panorama coaches from this set and have replaced it with a 4266 Eurofima Am in this consist. I have also added the 42163 Bpm on occasion and you could also use the 4366 "Chameleon" at times.
I use the leftover Panorama coaches with a mix of OBB and MAV coaches (from the 42724 set and others) along with a 4266 and 42173 type to reproduce the EC Transalpin.

43670

This set represents the EC "Riviera dei Fiori" between Basel and Nice around 2002-2004. You can add FS coaches (41893/41895/41896) to extend this consist.
You can also add some of the coaches from the 42166 to extend this set (domestic coaches EWIV).

42166-42162-42173
This would represent a typical non-push-pull Intercity or regional train. You could convert this to a push-pull consist by adding a 42179 pilot coach (with Re 460)

4215- 4216 - 42171 - 4236
This consist would represent a variant on a non-push pull IC of the 1980s/1990s behind a Re 4/4II, Re 6/6 or Re 460.

42172
This was a fantasy model in the predicted new (ICN) livery. By the time the coach was actually repainted, numerous changes had occurred to the livery, including new "Restaurant" markings and the pantograph had been removed.

42173 Gas kitchen w/o pantograph I am guessing that this is actually the 42174, which represents the current appearance of the restaurant coaches (see 42172). All of the EWIV Restaurants have been rebuilt with a kitchen that now functions from current provided from the train rather than requiring on board pantograph, which was used when the car was not connected to a locomotive in stations.

43526 is actually a Belgian coach and should be used with SNCB coaches like the 43513 and 4252/4253/4351/4352, etc in a consist for the EC "Iris" or "Vauban"

The 41897 Cisalpino is an FS coach and should be mixed with other Cisalpino (26544) or FS coaches (See above)

The Hag Coop car was used in Intercity consists (push-pull). The model is in 1:93 scale, so it is longer than the Maerklin 1:100 coaches.
It can be used with Roco 44331/332/333 and other 28cm Roco EWIV coaches.

The older 4162, 4168 and 4182 coaches did not have close couplings. They did have shorter couplers than the older coaches and can be used in combination with close coupled ones to yield a close enough connection.
Try a consist like this for best results: 4162 - 4267 - 4162 - 4268 - 4182 for a mixed Express/Night Train.

Check your 4215, 4216, 4217 and other coaches to see if they are the ones with close couplings. If yes, it is easier to combine with other coaches/consists.

What I can recommend is that you try to find the 42160 set for a few additional EWIV B coaches (new livery). You can also look on ebay for the set of 3 EC coaches in the new livery from the 29463 set.
Those can be combined with the 43650.1 "Gotthard Panorama Express" cars to make a current consist or to complete any of the Era V or VI consists above.

Fascinating- thanks Mike! A few questions if you don't mind:

- What was the color significance of the blue vs orange eurofima coaches, ala 4162 and 4268? Or did they just randomly run two liveries?

- would I stick a cisalpino coach on the "Rivieri dei fiori" set, or are those gotthard-route only?

That was remarkably helpful (as usual), thanks so much Mike!!!

The Eurofima coaches (SBB, OBB, FS, SNCB and some SNCF) were painted in the standard orange C1 livery, which was intended to be the new colours for European high comfort express trains. Previously, many railroads had used the red/beige TEE colour for top line international trains. The DB chose to continue to use the TEE livery and the SNCF chose the new Corail livery for most of it's coaches.
A few years later, the SBB ordered 20 very similar coaches to be used as couchette coaches for international night trains. They decided to use the blue with white stripe livery that was already adopted internationally for the Trans Euro Night sleepers.
The SBB had 20 of the A9 (first class - 9 compartments) of the VSE (European Standard Coach), which were known as class "Am" by the SBB. They were used as first class coaches in international trains. The SBB repainted a few of the WRm restaurant coaches to match and the final batch of RIC Bm compartment coaches were delivered in the matching C1 livery. A few years later, the SBB commissioned 30 Bpm coaches, similar to the DB Bpmz291, as the SBB did not have any open seating coaches for international traffic. These coaches went into service starting in 1979. The Maerklin models 4366 and 42163 represent variants of these coaches, although not very prototypical.

The blue Bcm coaches would be used with other couchette (Bc) coaches and with sleeper coaches (WLAm, WLABm) of the SBB and other companies. They could be found on trains from Holland or Germany to Italy, but also on trains from Switzerland to Italy, Austria, Yugoslavia and other places.

It is possible to add the FS Cisalpino coach to the 43670 set, but the set actually represents the consist before the Cisalpino set was introduced. I suppose that such a mix could have existed at the time when the FS coaches were being repainted in the new livery. The Cisalpino trains were operating on both the Gotthard and Lotschberg routes between Basel, Zuerich or Geneva and Venice, Milano or Rome. The "Riviera dei Fiori" did go to Milano and then south to Genoa and Nice (France).

What I would do with the 41897 Cisalpino coach is to look for the coaches from the 26544 set and then run them with a SBB Lok. You could also combine it with FS coaches from the 41893/41895/41896 XMPR sets.
