On my Alaskan cruise this summer I got the chance to ride the White Pass 3ft gauge railway in Skagway. The railway was founded in 1898, and was originally built for transportation to the goldfields in the Yukon. In 1994 the route was designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Here's some photos I took, and they don't do it much justice to display the engineering marvel that it really is. The first photo is of the GE diesel that pulled our train. The coaches have all been named after lakes in Alaska, Yukon, and British Columbia.

The last photo here is of a 1947 Baldwin 2-8-2 Mikado Class steam loco, which unfortunately, I didn't get to ride.
Refer to my next posts for the rest of the photos.

Below is the old Steel Bridge, this was once the tallest cantilever bridge in the world, and was used until 1969, as deemed to be unsafe. It was also constructed in the dead of winter. Additionally, the bridge is known as the ghost bridge as on foggy days, it just fades into the mist like this photo.

Thanks for the pics. Sure are great. We drove up there in 1998, and crossed over from Haynes on the ferry. That was an experience on its own, and camped ( in a trailer) above the town of Skagway before riding the cho cho..
As you, we had an electric lok, and it was very very crowded. It was a great ride, and the vistas were super. I took some pictures, but nothing remotely compared to your art. Our day was overcast.

Thanks again for such a great report.

Best regards,gene

Great pictures! There is a TV show called "Mighty Trains" on The Discovery Channel that had an episode dedicated to The White Pass and Yukon route. Highly recommend checking it and the entire series out. I only wish they made more episodes.

It appears they can be viewed online: http://www.discovery.ca/extra/mighty-trains

Just made the same trip in early September. Absolutely spectacular and a must for any rail fan.

Thanks for your comments and likes,
I just take a pile of photos, so those are just the best 15 out of the 100 that I took. I'll be sure to check out the Discovery Channel show, that seems very interesting. We were quite fortunate, as our ship was the only one in Skagway that day so we were afforded great views on the ride up and down, as we didn't have to switch seats to let the other passengers see the vistas. It was quite cloudy in some areas of the railway, but I think I got some cool photos with the fog anyways.
Regards,
Matthew
