I thought it might be an interesting question to see
what the most commonly owned loco except for the good
old 3000. I'm talking basemodels here like croc,v200,E10
'BR38,BR50.Wonder if the webmaster is interested in some
kind of poll or has this been done.

Most commonly owned all over the world must be the ones in the starter sets since 1900frozetodeath, as we say in my area of Sweden...

Possible the Br18.4 the S 3/6. It is a very popolar part of the marklin line and a very beautiful locomotive. A big seller in starter sets.

The German diesel 0-6-0 switcher V60/260 (Marklin 3064/3065 and her many many derivatives) has to be one of the most common locos.

I think:

— BR 89 (build by Märklin and Primex)
— P8 (old version and Primex)
— E41 or E10 (E41 was also build by Primex)
— V200 (build by Märklin and Primex)

They went in many starter sets.

Don't forget the large steamers and E-loks have ever been very expensive loks, so mrr beginners didn't prefer them. In 1974 you got two BR 24 for one BR 18.4 or BR 50, and 3 or 4 of them for a gator, almost the same price ratio as today.

From the 31 locs I have, three of them are BR 52's and two are S3/6 (S3/6 - BR 18.4).

So these are my most common ones.

Well, of all the loks you've all mentioned up until now, I only have the V200. So it gets my vote.
By the way, it is one of the two loks, that have survived from my childhood layout. And it still runs great.

My guess would be the 3005. Everybody used to have one back then when the big numbers were sold.

But 3003 and 3021 are also good guess.

3003, surely the second 'must have' loco after a 3000!

OK, I tried something, the "special search function" on Ebay. How many items were sold under a specific number during the last two weeks ????

10 --- 3040 (E 40 green)
19 --- 3015 (Old crocodile)
29 --- 3031 (BR 81, didn't search for 3032)
33 --- 3039 (E 10 blue)
54 --- 3005 (BR 23)
73 --- 3003 (BR 24 Steppenpferd)
76 --- 3037 (E 41 green / 34 units) plus 3034 (E 41 blue / 42 units)
(put together because of stark similarity even same serial number)

And the winner is:

128 pieces of 3021 (V 200) sold during the last two weeks ...

Even when taking into account that some locos might have been listed under different names/without catalog number, some of the above items might be empty boxes or spare parts, it still shows something, because these restrictions apply to all of the locos mentioned.

Regards,

Hans

Just one encore: the price range is extraordinary !!! Quite obviously it is a great time to sell shortly after Christmas, say three or four days after the festivities ..... Maybe the bidders are sitting at home, nothing to do, bored by family, with nostalgic feelings about how they used to receive locos as presents when young ...

A 3040 (E 40) averages around 63 Euro, but one was sold for 252 Euro, admittedly in fantastic new state !!!

3039 (E 10) goes from 40 Euro to 100 Euro .....

My collection, although not typical due to my preference for swiss models is largely 460's and gators.

Aren't we forgetting the 3001 in here somewhere? That was very popular, just discontinued sooner than other models

I always thought it would be logical that after Christmas no one would buy anything because they had just received lots of new stuff.

At least in ebay.com the Märklin items listed dropped dramatically for the Christmas day, but that is understandable since no one probably goes through ebay on such holiday. The number of items listed got back up fast few days after the holiday.
