Hello all, Does anyone else, also store his trains inside a drawer with foam? Or does know someone else who did? If so do you have some pictures from it? Which foam did you use? How did you cut (shape) the foam?Any other advice? Thanks in advance! Example My father will build the drawer. And the foam is probably my problem Kind regards, Timaximus |

For storage I prefer the original boxes that it came in. If you want to have for show then perhaps a display case would be an option. If you no longer have the boxes but want to store them then I think that your second example is easier to place the locomotives and remove them. I have a rail cleaning car which is enclosed with foam in it's orginal box and find it very hard to remove the item. The foam gets caught on the couplers when inserting or removing from the box.

I store all coaches, CU, and trafos in their boxes, except the tracks, in one handmade compartimented case. I agree with Maxi, the second one seems to be easier for storage purposes.

Hello,
Thanks for the response.
I understand the advice about the original boxes. So that you wont damage the buffers and couplings etc. But the soft foam cases inside the drawer will be not that tight.
It is for storage in the train room itself. It is not meant to store it for a long time not using it or for movement to another place.
Jus to get my trains fast to play with them. And put them save away fast when I want to run another train.
A showcase is beautiful, and I will have one, but I just have place for one. And the rest of our trains I want to store in a soft foam case in a drawer.
Regards,

Boxes work for me. These are used ammo boxes I picked up from the local hobby/decorating store. Edited by moderator 11 January 2011 16:08:18(UTC)

And the foam is probably my problem Kind regards, Timaximus I store my trains in a drawer, but not on foam. I have put tracks in the drawers (cheap Mehano track). You can fix the tracks with drops of white glue (you have to put a weight on it and let it dry for a night). An alternative for the white glue is rubber cement (from Talens e.g.); this is the stuff they use in glossy magazines to add removabole coupons e.g. With the rubber cement, you can remove the tracks later. Rubber cement is available in the better art (drawing, painting) stores. If you want to see a picture, I can make you one. Steven |

Hello Timaximus,
The second configuration in your Drawings is good for Train-Storage. A word of caution about using Foam in your Drawers: Foam will pick up moisture when it is in a humid place ( like a basement or a unheated room). If you store Metal Cars and Engines they will pick up rost. A better solution would be a piece of thin Carpet or a corduroy Fabric (Samt).

Here you go: Note that this method is not for drawers you take with you to expos. Still, you could use this track method and make soft foam separators to have protection if you move the drawers. Steven |

Steven,
Thanks for the photo. I will keep this one in mind.
Martin,
It is for the drawer in the train room itself. At normal living room conditions.
But that is an important point.
Thanks for all the info so far from everyone. |
