Hi all,

I wonder about the correctness of the 37338 CFL 3600 (SNCF BB12000).

The first model 37330 suffered from quite some errors, like a window being too small and some misplaced frame holes.
In later versions (37331-37337) this has been corrected.

Now 37338 has been released as the CFL3600 version after the removal of the extra headlights, but before repainting to the Bordeaux red/yellow livery.

The earlier CFL versions show the correct big (original) louvres as well as the small CFL-specific louvres.

Marklin model 37338 only shows the small CFL louvres.

Pictures on www.rail.lu show many versions, either with both small and big louvres as well as big louvres only. But no versions with just the small louvres, like shown on 37338.

In fact the actual example 3619 is shown with only big louvres.

The louvre layout on 37338 is different from all the others in the series 37330-37337 so the changes to show the small louvres only is a deliberate tooling change.
Is this a new mistake?

Nevertheless a beautiful loc with excellent running characteristics, but this small thing is bothering me....

Best regards,
Gregor

Hi, I think Marklin may have made your model as the first batch to run in Luxembourg in the 50s. I think? I say this, because many new electric locos built in France had body alterations in the early 60s to create better airflow to cool them down. If you look at a picture of a sncf bb16000 electric of the same period, it to, started with a simple band of louvres along the side and looked like a bb9200. By the early 60s, most had extra louvres right up to the cab windows?? I don't have any pictures unfortunately, to support my theory on the 3600. But I do know that other vents etc were added to them later? Even the Train special magazine on bb12000 and 3600, only shows 60s pictures of them and later as does your picture. Also Marklin have already made a blue CFL flat iron, which is correct for the early 60s up to when the locos were painted red.
You could try contacting the guy who does the Rail.lu web site as his a helpful man who speaks English. Hope this helps.
I'm sure Marklin must also have pictures. Cheers Dan

I couldn't say whether it is a mistake or deliberate, the prototype loco has 4 headlights and the Märklin model has only 2 and as mentioned the louvers., the have made models before whereas they just added a new catalogue number, driven the price up and get away with it.

John, the the picture, is from the late 60s, or later. Look at the bogie open wagons? Not the late 50s. The 3600 were produced in batches like the sncf 12000. Some had the small bonnet tail lights, some did not. The French removed or even just covered them over, replacing them with tail lights next to the main headlights?
Most of the time however 3600 tail lights were added as a red glass disc, slotted over the main headlights in a frame, like putting a filter over a camera lens??
John, this model train hobby is only going to get more expensive and we will see less models being produced with it, and therefore more of the same type in a different paint job. I'm sure there are people at Marklin who may get things wrong as other makes do?
But I'm sure and I know they all get it wright as well. After all I emagine Marklin have a much bigger photo archive than us?

I had in mind buying one of these but than finished up with a Lima CC 14000, fortunately much cheaper as my wallet is getting thinner and thinner and I'm now down to coins
