I purchased the locomotive while living in Pa. in the late 70s from a hobby shop. I was always going to buy cars, track, transformer, etc. but as the expression goes, life intervened and it's been in the box unused ever sense. It's time for it to find a home with someone who will enjoy it. I looked online to get a sense of its value by model number which is 3015. The date of manufacture on the box is coded June of 1973. Should I offer it for sale on ebay? How should I price it? Any advice from you dedicated model railroaders is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi- ebay is probably your easiest/best bet. In terms of price, it depends if you are trying to squeeze every last dollar. I'd probably start it at $300 or $350 and let the market dictate value from there via bidding. (the 300-350 being a minimum to let go of it, I wouldn't start it lower than $300)

Well you can look at this :

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marklin...9eb28:g:YsYAAOSwiYFXILdq

Also have a read of this:

https://www.marklin-users.net/fo...fying-3015-versions.aspx

What would be helpful is if you can is to attach some photos of the loco including the box.
The forum members will then be able to give you a more realistic value of your loco.

I also found this & it should give you a good indication of what to expect. It is however in Euros.

if you have the box as well and all is in mint condition with all its paperwork included you can ask for a maximum price (more than $ 300.00) but one has to be sure its not a kit.

Hi,

Does it come with an old-style monochrome instruction manual or a red and white 'Serviceheft'? The old instruction manuals for the 3015 Croc were last printed in 1975. If there's one of those in the box, it's definitely not a kit. The 1973 date on the box also suggests that.

- Have a close look at the wheels. Are the wheels flanges rounded? If they aren't, it was definitely made before 1975.
- Are the sliders partially made of copper? If yes, the loco was probably produced after 1974.

If it has the instruction manual, sliders without any copper parts as well as wheels that do NOT have rounded flanges AND has never been used at all, any true vintage collector would pay $450 for it if you can provide detailed XXL photos. Digital users, who might also like it, won't pay that much because they want bargains and need to consider the extra cost of converting it. Sell it to a vintage collector, who will appreciate its truly mint condition.

There's one thing you should check, though. Is there any styrofoam from the box inset sticking to the loco? That's a common problem with Märklin locos that have never ever been taken out of the box and greatly reduces their value.

Best regards,
Mark

P.S. If you manage to sell it privately outside Ebay, you'll save the 10 per cent fee. On this forum you can probably find someone who will buy it.
Best regards, Mark

I like Märklin items produced in the 1960s or early '70s, but also digital locos & current rolling stock.

Thank you all for your feedback and recommendations. I've taken the train out of its box several times over the years as I enjoyed marveling at the precision/detail of the metal parts(a retired architect). Indeed bits of styrofoam have stuck to it as it was removed from the box. I've taken multiple Iphone pix and have uploaded same to this PC. I will post them to this forum and honor requests for additional views should they be suggested. Is there a protocol unique to this site for posting I should follow?

Just use the paperclip symbol when posting to attach a photo or photos. Keep picture sizes under 250kb and you will be fine.

CORRECTION

My wife tells me that I "test drove" the crocodile at the store(Montoursville Pa.?) at the time we purchased it as we had no track, power, etc. I can't say how long we played with it before reboxing and going home, maybe an hour, but to say that it is "unused" would be inaccurate. My apologies.
