I'm pretty much a newbee to my Marklin C track setup and am enjoying the digital world of my trains. I just purchased a Viessmann 5211 digital decoder to run three of my turnouts. I also bought my first electric uncoupler. I am using a Marklin mobile station to run my trains. The uncoupler has a blue and yellow wire.
Are there any tricks to connecting the uncoupler so I can use it digitally?
I have been told it is somewhat easy to burn out the uncoupler motor if one continues to keep the motor on. Will the mobile station send a temporary signal to the uncoupler?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Hi there,

The Viessmann 5211 is pulse decoder (and not a switching decoder like 5213).

For normal digital operation it will just send a short brief pulse (like when operating turnouts).

For uncouplers you would normally press the button as long as you want the uncoupler to activate (1-2 sec).

This will not harm it and that's what it was built for.

I am not familiar with mobile station setup, but normally you will assign a uncoupler symbol so it knows it should energies it as long as the users press the button.

A switching decoder simply switch power on and off and you don't want to use that for this setup.

Hope this helps.

Hi Zev,

For the wiring you will connect the yellow wire to the last free middle port on your decoder. The blue wire can go in either of the green or red port.

Then you need to add a solenoid symbol for uncoupler on your mobile station and configure the address corresponding to the decoder port.

So are you saying I can not use the Viessmann #5213 decoder to activate my uncoupler?

I wouldn't. As already stated the 5213 is similar to the K84 and turns the power on or off. So unless you are fast with switching the power on and off it will remain on and burn out your uncoupler solenoid. That is why the K83 or Viessmann 5211 are more suitable.

Cheers

Stating the obvious: you can of course run two uncouplers per position ie eight in total per 5211 or from what you say three turnouts and two uncouplers the two yellow wires share the middle socket and the blues either side. Then on the MS one uncoupler is operated by the corresponding green button and one by the red. Personally I find the MS keyboard a bit fiddly for uncouplers as you press the uncoupler pulse and at the same time have to move the lok using the other screen lok controller.

Am I correct in assuming that I can use the Viessmann # 5213 as a decoder to turn on/off lights at a station etc. when a train is approaching? Also I presume one #5211 will handle 8 uncouplers as stated previously?

Thank you for your help.It was a bit confusing for me.

Yes you can use the 5213 as a decoder to turn on/off lights. That is what it is intended to do to turn on and off steady lighting or motor loads. You would need some additional components to do it when a train is approaching. Since I do not know your layout details I cannot tell you what, but assume you would need to trigger it from an S88 contact.

Yes a 5211 can handle 4 turnouts or 8 single solenoid items such as an uncoupler or any combination such as 3 turnouts and 2 uncouplers, etc.

Cheers

I always find the Viessmann instruction sheets included with the product very good and clear and with German and English in separate paragraphs one by one so you can even learn a bit of German! They are also available as a pdf before you buy from their website. So: http://www.viessmann-mod...ish/5213-04-DE,%20GB.pdf

So what’s the recommended Viessmann decoder for turnouts? 5211 vs 5213
