I know I saw this somewhere this year, but I can not think where.[:p]

I put my Starlight Express Lok on the track today to test out parts of my layout. Ran fine for about 2 meters, then stopped.[xx(][:0]
Then started, ran for about a foot, then stopped. Running distance got shorter and shorter, until it was centimeters.[xx(]
Hard stop too, no coasting, just wham, dead stop. Then zoom at full speed, then wham, stop.

I know it is the motor, but what parts do I need to work on?

P.S., 60902 decoder, came with Lok.

If you retest it, does it have the same symptoms everytime or is it just going for a couple of centimeters at a time now everytime you test it?

I just tested the Lok again.
Out of the box, runs about 1-2 meters then stops. After that, runs smaller distances. Very eratic, sometimes moves 1mm, 1mm, 1 meter, 12 cm, 1mm, 50 cm, etc.[B)]

Could the decoder be heating up that quick?

The model number is 37373.

I had the exact same symptoms on one of my loks - the red BR216 Diesel that came with the 29845 starter pack. I usually would get the symptoms in under 30 seconds (I timed it). It also lost the ability to go slow - just either fast/off or struggling slow then fast/off/fast etc. Really no control. If it went, it went for varying distances. It was only speed control - the functions (sound, lights) still worked even if the lok wouldn't move.

I've rebuilt the motor, changed the brushes. It seems to be the decoder in my case. I've tested the motor with another spare 60902 and it works fine.

Sorry, not much help. Your problem sounds similar, and in my case I think I've given up on the decoder.

Hmm, strange behaviour. Did you check whether the 2 EMI inductivities and the capacitors are correctly installed between motor and decoder ?

I once had a similar problem with uncorrelated stop and go. Finally I found that the red wire between the decoder and the ski contact was broken.
