As a late returnee to Marklin I am starting to plan a layout that I hope to start building later this year. M track, analogue and using only what I have. I reckon I have enough for a 2m x 1m board with catenary, signals and all that stuff (if I can remember how to wire it!).

Being a Mac user I am planning things out using Railmodeller Pro which is easy enough but doesn't always seem to have things I have. Or maybe there are different numbers for the same thing...

A good example is that it uses a set of points (turnout) 5203 when I have 5202. When it gets to crossings things become more involved.

So the question is, have some numbers been superseded by others and if so, is there a document that cross references more recent numbers with older ones?

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Here's my layout so far... no attempt at reality, just trying to cram as much into the space as I can. It doesn't quite fit yet. Comments or criticisms very welcome!

Hi Michael,

This is simple: 5117 is a set of turnouts (one left, one right). 5118 is a single left turnout, 5119 is a single right turnout. Same for the 5202 turnout: 5202 is a pair which consists of one left turnout 5203 and one right turnout 5204. The numbers of the single turnouts were not mentioned in the catalogues but Märklin also delivered packs with two left or two right turnouts on request.

The 5117 (..18/19) was replaced with 5137 (..38/39) in the mid 1970s. The 5137 turnouts consisted of a shorter turnout and a small piece of rail which gave more flexibility in the geometry.

The crossings 5013, 5126 and 5128 all have the same geometry. The older types (5013, 5126) are driven with two solenoids, the 5128 has only one solenoid.

Regards

Markus

Markus, many thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I shall open up all the old boxes and study the contents in detail!

Ake, I have used Railmodeller Pro. It is the only planning software that I could find that does M track for the Mac.

It is not the world's best bit of software and has a few annoying habits but it is useable. Railmodeller Express is free but only allows you a limited amount of pieces (in effect a sample). The Pro version costs but I have found it does what I need...so far.

Michael
