Hello Everybody

Having just purchased my new Marklin 39024 ex Baden IV, I start to focus on my next target, which is the wonderful (to my eyes) Marklin 39250 Swiss Class C 5/6 "Elephant". I know that this model is depicted as it is currently in a Museum (?). Since I mainly collect eras I and II, I have been wondering if the "Elephant" had different livery in era II. I know that this may be a difficult question, but I hope that maybe some SBB connoisseurs are watching.

Best Regards

Paris

Excellent choice.
Fantastic loco.
Pulls 40 2 axle cars without any apparent effort.
Very accurate model too.
Same uniform black color scheme throughout its existence.
Some passenger SBB steam locos had a different bleu-grey/ black paint scheme (see attached picture of the A 3/5 705)

Hello Jacques.

Thank you for your reply. Already made a reservation for the 39250 (when it will be reissued I guess). What a great photo you posted!!! Thank you.

Paris

P.S. Correction about the Marklin 39024. Tonight I visited my local dealer to collect my ordered 39024, but upon doing a test run, I felt that the electrical "hiss" noise of the motor (when running without sound) was excessive. I could even hear it with the operating sounds on. Thank God my dealer graciously accepted that I get a different loco.

So now... I am the happy owner of a Marklin 37016 DRG class 15, former Bavarian class S 2/6 steam express locomotive.

Very Happy with it!!!Love Love Love

Hi Paris,

What a shame you were not happy with the 39024. I have the 39023 which is the same loco but in blue, and I have to say it is one of my favourite locos. I don't hear any excessive noise from the motor, certainly nothing louder than other locos with this type of motor. Maybe you got a faulty one.

The 37016 is, of course, a great loco too, so I'm happy for you! I also have the 37015 which is brilliant!

Hello Ray.

Totally agree with you that all Baden IVs are great. I have been searching for a long time for a brand new, reasonably priced 39020 or a 39021 or a 39022 or a 39023, but with no luck. I have read warnings on Stummis Forum that 39024 has a somehow loud motor. Hoped it is an exaggeration. To me it wasn't. Perhaps it is just me, but the noise was too much for me. Hopefully at some point I will find one of the above beauties. Right now I am so very excited with my new 37016 BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin .

Enjoy your wonderful locos!!!

Paris

Hi Paris,

I agree with Ray - my 37015 is indeed brilliant and is one of my favorite locos. Enjoy your 37016!

Hello Everybody

Looking on Marklin's website, the 39250 status is marked in yellow with the quote "Article temporarily not in stock". I hope this means that in the near future they will produce some more locos to dispatch to dealers.Confused

One different scenario would be to just wait for Marklin to release the same mold, maybe as an Era I or Era II locomotive in the future. This would be ideal for me. I collect era I and II and I am afraid that the bright yellow handrails on 39250 are characteristic of era III on SBB and not correct for era II (is that right?).

Maybe Steven with his excellent information, has some insights on 39250's future availability??? BigGrin

Hi Paris, If you are still looking, it is available here. I have dealt with joes-modellbahnlaedle a lot in the past. They have always been very good. Alan

The color of the handrails has little to do with specific eras AFAIK !
Originally they were bare brass.
Then they were painted black, but relatively quickly , most depots painted them yellow.
Why?
You know that the Swiss have a reputation for "cleanliness"Wink
That applies also to locomotives' handrails!
As a courtesy to their colleagues, engineers would wipe the handrails (and all handles in the lok) to leave their colleagues with a "clean" workplace.
It is still very much in vigor today: if you are in a Swiss station, just watch them come out of the cab with a wiping rag in the hand.
(They also draw the sunshades in the cab to keep it as cool as possible ... )
With black paint, dirty spots were harder to notice, so they were all promptly painted bright yellow.
I have not found specific info on the dates of the "color conversions"Wink BigGrin
Some old locos have still **black handles** today.
Just an anecdote, maybe.
Cheers

Alan, thank you very much for the tip. I will have this in mind. I always try to give priority to my local dealer first (HMC of Greece) trying to support local economy. On the other hand, the beautiful 39250 will have to wait for a little while, due to .... budget reasons. Not being able to resist to the beautiful S2/6 ladies (Marklin 37016 and 37017) which I purchased both in less than one month, I must let my wallet ... recuperate for a little while BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin

Jacques, thank you for explaining all that to me. It is really very - very helpful. Now I want this beauty even more.

Best Regards to you both.
