This is a real rare bird. I'd love to have it. That box is about 1 metre long :)! Gotta love it!

It's on Ebay. Current price is € 931,00. Auction ends in 2 days.

The German secondhand dealer Kurt Bothner has one 3025 "Triebwagen" for sale with original box, good cond. The price tag is 1800,- EUR.

I have bought many items from Kurt, he's reliable and fast.

I am lucky enough to have come upon one of these. However, while like new in condition it has been converted to 2 rail! The parts seem to be all there and it was by no means a hackjob but I don't know how to convert it back! I will post some photos tommorow and would appreciate any help. It appears to have been converted a long time ago and shouldn't be tough to return to its original state but I will need some of you guys expertise. Wow, I've been avoiding this project for a while now. See what this forum can do!

Given the worth of the 3025, I'd ship it to Märklin and have them do it. Alterations decrease the worth almost exponentially, so be careful!

I just received a 3025 today - in the original box with instructions. Apparently manufactured in 1959.

The biggest problem was a bent drive axle - which I replaced immediately (took a half hour), and for some reason I had a new axle/gear/wheels for this engine in my parts supply - these old engines are very easy to take apart and repair.

The model has the original two short schleifer for 3rd rail - should I replace these or will it run OK on the PUKO's of the modern Maerklin track?

Secondly - how do people feel about relative value of the model if I were two repaint the roof, good idea or bad idea? It's not super ugly - but I'm not sure if I like the spots on it that much.

Anyway - it is beautiful and puts modern Maerklin too shame; heavy castings, intuitive electrical construction, robust metal gears, and oddly enough that wonderful smell of an AC motor ionizing the air around it - this thing ran on the roller test stand right out of the box (even prior to fixing the axle).

Now if I can just find a nice SK 800 .... without the high command finding out .... Maerklin or a mistress - which one is ultimately less costly??????

The two pictures at the top of this discussion did not work, so I found this with a Google search. Is this what we are talking about?

In general, my experience from almost 50 years of collecting is that repainting almost always severely reduces collector value.

The owner who is considering repainting collectible items needs to answer a series of questions:

1. Is the paint so badly damaged that repainting will actually increase the value?

2. If no, will I keep the item for the rest of my life and do not care about my heirs getting maximum resale value?

3. If yes to both above questions, will I be happier with an excellent repaint than the original?

4. If yes, can I do the repaint or should I find a professional?

I would be interested to know what else should be considered?

P.S. - If the spots are from mold, you might try rubbing gently with a very soft cloth moistened in clear water.

re your 3025, I wish I had a pocket deep enough to afford one! Unless the paintwork is very bad I should leave it alone as repaints do reduce the collectable value, possibly by 25 to 50 percent. But then again its always going to be worth a lot being such a rare model.

<font face="Verdana]The 3025 is attractive because of its rarity, it's indestructibility and that beautiful light-blue box. The model itself isn't very attractive to look at, I think. I'd still buy one if I had the money.</font id="Verdana]
