I am now approaching the point of connecting my reed switches to the S88s. I have 1 60883 and 2 60881 and may buy a 2nd 60883. My first question is the power supply to the 60883s. The manual, page 16, shows 1 power supply (66365) to the first 60883 connected to the central station (CS2) but no additional power supply to any additional 60883s. In other words only 1 power supply is needed for all 60883s used. Is that correct?

Regards
Harvey

What's the purpose of buying another 60883 S88-Link? You only need one 60883 S88-Link and connect all 60881 (or 60882 for DCC) to the 60883. This 60883 needs to have a power supply 66365. If at all it is possible to have more than one 60883 S88 Link than I assume each 60883 would need a power supply.

Kind regards
Jörg

The image referenced shows ONE 60883(L88 = LinkS88) to which you may chain multiple (x96) 6088(0)(S88),60881(S88 AC),60882(S88 DC)
It is only the one power supply that is needed for the one 60883(L88) in this subsystem.
The 6088(0),60881,60882 get their power from the 60883

Note: The image does indicate 31 units per bus. To me this is suspect. The management tools in the controllers do imply 32 although they, too, are variable.

If this is not a typo and you do have multiple 60883s(L88s) then you need one powersupply per 60883

It is possible to connect more S88 Links to the CAN bus. You might find it beneficial to install additional S88 Links if you have a large layout. You could design your feedback by using clusters of feedback modules in sections of your layout. You would only need to drag the main CAN bus cable around the layout, install a 60125 terminal and some power source for the S88 Link. Since you can also connect boosters and additional Mobile Stations to the terminal, you might want to place it some where with easy access. Having to drag only one cable, might be useful for some.

For modular layouts it can be beneficial since each S88 Link has its own address. Let's say you have a modular layout with a few stations and some automation going on at each station. Let's assume that you do not always set up your layout in the same order. Without additional S88 Links you would have to reconfigure the automation in the Central Station if you re-arrange the modules. With the S88 Link each station can have its own address (the S88 Link has an internal address). This means that no matter how you configure your layout, the automation will always work because the Central Station knows which station it deals using the S88 Link address.

Hi MarklinLife,

yes, I know that you could use a terminal 60125 and can connect a 60883 S88-Link to it and it should have the benefits you described, but have you tried it out or seen such a setup in practice?

Kind regards
Jörg

Yes,

However, may I ask what the point of this inquiry is?

The 'modular' layout scenario seems the one case that I can believe you really want multiple Link S88's, due to the simplistic shift-register way the S88 inputs are read out. When one reconfigure one's layout, and wants the existing programming to work, that helps ensure consistent addressing.

For large layouts in general, I'm not convinced, since the S88N signal over Cat5 cabling can be strung along from subsequent S88 AC/DC input modules simply enough. No need for more Link S88's there.

Yes, just want to understand that this working in practice. Thanks for confirming.

Kind regards
