Commuter train type NS Mat 64 (AKA Plan V) finally went into retirement late September 2016,after more than 50 years of loyal duty.
These trains brought thousends home in the most terrible weather conditions, they would always run no matter what.
Their nickname was Apekop (=Monkeyhead).
The last one has gone to our national railwaymuseum at Utrecht.
Seeing their looks,i reckon they could last another 50 years!
Watch the crowds waiting for her along the tracks, amazing!

Thank you Paul for reminding me of nice memory's (mooie herinnering!!) of my youth!

I rode on these Mat 64 's many times when I was a teenager living and working for Uncle (Oom) Jopie and Aunt (Tanta) Nelly in Nijmegen. Best VIS bij Van R....ijk Vishandl!

I would ride the train to Armhern every Tuesday and Thursday to pick up fresh smoked eels (gerookte paling} that were sent from the Fish farmer (visboer) on the trian from Harderwijk.

Once I ruined a brand new Wrangler brown corduroy jacket when the smoked eel oil leaked out of the boxes onto my jacket. Was I ever upset!

As most of us know it was the "jacket" to wear in the mid seventies!

Michel,

I had the Wrangler jacket in combination with the standard brown army boots, and that was well before my actual army time!

You had to show this now didn't you? Now I'm sad.
This train took me to school, to Opa and Oma, to vacation with the tiener tour card.
I guess it only went out of service because it was old, not that there was anything wrong with it. Kinda like the 1200 locomotives. ;).

Oh, the fish on the market, freshly baked, the smell, the taste, ......Love

This train took me to the army barracks on Sundaynights,as such it is engraved in my memory.
I guess after 50 years they ran out of spareparts, and that means the game is over.
Also, they were very noisy,in particular the brakes.
Looking at the furniture,a major update would have been required and then it comes to economical calculations, verdict being no go.
The current commuter trains are a totally different experience, light, roomy, fast, information systems, nice!

I do recall the intercity multiple units Hondekop (=Dogshead) which also lasted for decades.
Well, sit down in a modern VIRM doubledeck intercity or sit down in a Intercity Direct coach pulled by a series 189 loco at 160 km/h and you will not look back.

Surprisingly enough the cockpit still looks rather modern.

One double unit has gone to the railwaymuseum at Utrecht,i guess all the others will be scrapped.

I am sorry that i made you sad, progress my friend,progress..........

Michiel,

Rumour has it that Marklin will take care of their Dutch fans in 2017,wait and see.

I recently bought the 3389 NS PTT postal unit,it has the same cabins as Mat 64,albeit it has a plastic hood.
M could do a real effort and issue a Mat 64 in metal.

There is potential for further new Dutch models.
Looking at Roco, what to think of NS series 1000,the first electric loco in Holland,or the NS Diesels series 2200 and 2400?
Converting Intercity coaches to Intercity Direct coaches to match the series 189 loco will be an easy job.
Perhaps a dummy 189 loco to reflect the prototype train having a loco at each end?
A VIRM perhaps?
A Hondekop,Trix issued these decades ago,in green and also in red,a well sought item nowadays.

It all has to do with money,of course.

I prefer NOT to focus on Dutch stuff.
Next on my list are the DR steamer 01.5 and a modern version of the steamer series 23.

Hi Paul,

Nice to know that your collecting steam trains, DR steamer 01.5 Nice! Presently I have no steamer but will one day!

One of the problems collecting Marklin in Canada is that Marklin produced locomotives are hard to find.

Because of that I've been collecting DB, NSB, SJ and SBB of course NS.

What I need a is secret shopper in Holland who can find me the items I'm looking for and ship them to me!

Michel,

I can be your secret chopper,no worries!

Of course we need to agree on price and despatch costs, there will be no need for a profit for me.

How does that sound?

Hi Paul,

Sounds like a good idea! What I have noticed is that Marklin makes products for Holland and you can only buy from Holland. That leaves me and other out who live in Canada.

Not long ago Marklin made the 37422 Koploper Olympia NS now that is cool and I wonder if it still available?

Regards,

Michel
