Hey, hey - calm down, Gentlemen. I've never made those bridges by myself nor are they on my layout [:I]
Joe asked for pictures and I just delivered them from my picture collection ... Smile

Closer to 3000, Ulf - collecting nice MRR pictures can be quite rewarding. And way cheaper than the same amount of locos ... Smile

Stephen: Each time browsing the web I'm deeply impressed how many high-skilled artists are among our MRR community ... [:p]
Those rusty spots on bridge #1 f.e. look so real - one is tempted to bring his steel brush biggrin

to make rust, try a relatively new product called "weather system" from Bragdon Enterprises.
www.bragdonent.com
it is a powder kit containing several colors of rust, which contain a dry adhesive, so no clear coat is needed to fix the rust, unlike what you would need with pastels.

Thanks Jon. Looks like interesting stuff. I've ordered some. We'll see how it works.

Hello Joe,

Even if I have not completed any bridge till now, I suppose that bridges and trestles have to be weatherized such as other structures :

First step is to remove the plastic effect by covering the structure with a matt (or sometimes with a satin) paint or varnish.
Then weatherize with various tones of matt rust, black, brown and grey. Use mix of the three last colors. I have recently bought Floquil #110006 Dust paint but never tried till now.

I would also suggest you to get a copy of the following book if you have the intention to build original bridges or trestles : http://store.yahoo.net/kalmbachcatalog/12101.html

I already have bought a Micro Engineering Company 150' Tall Steel Viaduct to convert if to the AC 3 Rail (the kind of stuff that I like !) : http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/255-75514

By the way, there is a very nice trestle in Cap Rouge, very close to Quebec City. Usually people only visit the beautiful old town and Chateau Frontenac, but the trestle of Cap Rouge cannnot be missed by any railfan (there is also a huge beer store almost just under the trestle which produce a special beer dedicated to the trestle !). So, Joe, when will you visit Quebec ?

Pierre.

For HO scale, certainly (excepted if you live in a tunnel or in a Boeing fuselage !). But it could be possible to make a replica in Z scale and maybe N scale.
I can tell you that the actual trestle is very impressive.

It is the same term down here - they are usually artists crayons... Noch make a weathering paint set p/n 61220 that costs about $40 in Australia.. I can't find it on the Noch site - Humbrol also make a similar product..

colored dry chalk = pastels. dry brushed on and then you would need some sort of clear coat/fixative

for metal parts there is also a product called rust-all. but have not tried it. It can be found through Micro-Mark.

I took this picture of Cap Rouge Trestle two days ago. I was lucky with the weather and the fact that I didn't have to wait for a train ... in the good direction for the picture !

Other pictures on my Fotopic.net Gallery. wink
