I am having a derailing problem with my 5140 turnouts My passenger cars new and old like to derail at any speed and both turnout settings. Is this a known problem? I have several sets of these turnouts, they seem in good condition and changing them does not cure problem. Is there something correctable with these units or are new ones the only solution? Signed, mystified analog dude:))

I have lots of these on my current layout and they operate without problem. That said, they were problematic on an earlier version of the layout where they were not laid flat. These turnouts seem to work best when they and the approaching tracks are laid level and flat.

In terms of reliable switching - the number one tip here is to replace the springs. They are getting very hard to find these days, but they are around on eBay.

I do have derailments from Re460 towing the swiss passenger wagons with close couplers. This is not a turnout problem - rather the coupler catches on the locos buffer and causes the passenger wagon to lift off the track. To diagnose this properly, I had to move the train backwards and forwards slowly over the turnout to see what was happening..

Hi,

I have had similar problem with my plastic body coaches with sliders.
Problem was cured when I turned the derailing coach around (back to forth).

Hello Thomas,

Yes this is a known problem.

Check the parts I marked yellow. On older series where they are made of metal, they become loose and get out of position. They can be re-fastened from the underside using a small collet.

Regards

Markus

Interesting enough, 4 of my 5140's have the loose areas noted on your pic. I have another set that I am assuming are an upgrade design because the loose parts on the other 4 are molded to track rail solid piece on this set... I will try to shim the turnouts with wobbly guides from underneath...TKS guys for the help
