Can a 5558 1 Scale Crocodile be run on LGB DC Power?

Hi everyone,
Random question- can a Marklin digital 5558 Crocodile be run on DC power like an LGB system? It is digital, so I would assume so, but thought I'd ask efore I fry something! Advice is appreciated, the paperwork it came with is only a parts list and a certificate, no owners manual. Marklin has the newer Croc manuals online, but I wasn't sure if this has the same digital electronics? |

Hi John, Yes apparently the 5558 Crocodile can be operated with DC. Here is the description from the 1994 Marklin catalog.

Hi,
Yes, it can run on DC. It has a switch on the underside of the middle-part to set the operation-system. But on a LGB - layout you must be very careful. LGB - transformers have an output of up to 24VDC which is to much for the loco (max 14 VDC).
Regards

Yes I agree with Markus, I was just logging on to make the same point. LGB DC controllers put out too high a voltage, usually around 22v, even the newer switch mode power supply ones still put out 19v which would risk damaging the electronics of the loco.
If you want to run on analogue, maybe try a Marklin 6647 AC controller.
Best Regards Ashley

Thanks all! Good to know on several counts- particularly the voltage issue/compatibility with DC... |

Matt Era 3 DB lokos, coaches and freight cars from across Europe But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control. With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397. |

Really wanted it, but couldn't bid higher w/o getting killed by my wife. (Even at my high bid, I was going to have to hide it from her somehow ;) Still, someone got a great deal. Cheers!
