Hi all,
I'm a new member to the group and noticed this area dedicated to Faller buildings. I love the older Faller buildings especially the cardboard and plaster ones on the wood (masonite) bases. I have several which are favorites on my train layout including the saw mill, factory and post office. I try and post some pics, hopefully soon. Unsure

I also have some of the Faller combi-kits which I also like. These are the ones with printed walls fully decorated and plastic roof, bases, windows & doors etc. made of plastic. I like to find out some more information about these kits.

When were they made and for how many years?

Thanks, Chuck (skeeterbuck)

Hello Chuck,
Welcome to the forum ! ThumpUp

The 1950/60s cardboard -plaster buildings are indeed lovely classic cult models, beloved by many Faller collectors and enthusiasts.

I sure would love to see some pictures of yours.

About the combi kits with the weird printed walls, there are lots of them and they were available in a different period of time, roughly from 1975 to 1984, but to be more precise I made a list for you.

Please let me kwow if you need any more info, I always like to talk Faller here on the forum.

Marco

Thanks Marco for the warm welcome and the your listing of all the "combi" kits.
From the looks of the boxes, I would have thought the kits were from the late 60's. Maybe a transition from the older card & plaster buildings to the all plastic kits. Apparently that's NOT the case.

Marco, by chance do you have any info why Faller started making the combi kits? Maybe a cheaper alterternative to the all plastic kits?

Of the several I've built, with a little additional painting on the plastic (mainly the roof and base) these can be made into very nice looking buildings.

I've getting my train layout in good order in preparation for the Christmas Holidays and should hopefully be able to take some pics before the New Year. I'll be sure to post them here.

A lot of information about Faller can be found in the Faller Magazin series, however that series stopped after 98 magazines in December 1974, so no info there on the combi kits.

But it is generally assumed that the combi kits with their 'photorealistic' cardboard walls, was some kind of trial to attract more customers. But the combi kits were never that successful.
In those days plastic was a hallmark for quality, everyone wanted to have plastic modelkits.
Cardboard houses were seen as something from the 'previous generation'.

Marco, as a follow up on the Combi-kits. I read on another site the reason for Faller introducing the line was to use less plastic because of the worldwide oil shortage at the time. Seems plausible to me. Confused

Maybe Faller thought that keeping the price down would keep them more competitive.

I doubt whether this is true, at that time Faller releaed many new products, all made of plastic, like Playtrain, E-train, Autoland and lots and lots of plastic kits.

Marco

BTW, Faller had problems with their supply of raw materials, but that was in 1964.
In December 1964 - in Faller Magazin 44 - Faller announced that due to this and various other problems no new items were coming for 1965. The Faller Company wrote quit frank about their worries and difficulties in the article 'RÜCKBLICK-AUSBLICK ! The company was very worried about the difficult situation in Germany at that time.

Yea Marco, they're all unbuilt with the exception of 1513 train station "Kappel". I had doubles of houses 1610 & 1611 which I built and are on my layout with the station.

I glad you enjoyed seeing them. Hopefully soon I have pics of my older Faller pieces to show and I include pics of the combi-kits that I built. I also have several R&S buildings that I sure you know are very nice.

I have a couple of Combi kits myself, made up items of course, I just wanted to see how they looked. I have the terraced houses and one other, I can't recall what.

But, I wondered if you had ever seen the "grown-up" Combi kits? BigGrin

In the 70's, among their 'Toy' product range was Hit Train, (along with Hit Car, e-Train, Play train etc)

Anyway, there were some 'kits' for Hit-Train which followed the same style, Hit-Train is 0-gauge (1:45) and the accessories to compliment the range included some wonderful items.

I have two of them which came up locally some years ago and I just could not resist them, these are original and in my view very very cool. They may be freely available around Germany still I have no idea but the St. Georg Station in particular is awesome, hope you enjoy my contribution....

Yea cookee,

I have seen the Hit Train Buildings. They do look nice and are in the "combi" style for sure. Never bought one as I only concentrate on HO gauge.

Hello Chuck,

Thank you for sharing your wonderful collection !
You have some pretty rare items in your collection like the Faller factory #214 and it seems to be in very good condition.
I like your Spitaler structures a lot as well, like the RS Gasthof/Hotel #6455 that is also in very good condition.
Thanks again for sharing.ThumpUp

Hi Chuck, I'm only 7 years late here.I 've got a number of the same kits, and they are a joy to make. the cardboard realism is a great feature. However I cannot find one part of 1513 and would appreciate a photo if possible. in the instructions its a verandah for the station and its item 13/2. There seems to be no 13 card or anything leftover that might work. any help would be wonderful. cheers Brett
