I remember reading about a Viessman single motor and decoder for Marklin turnouts. I have searched around for days to no avail. I have a Marklin CS2, brand new, and would like to control my 16 switches. However going the Marklin way is really expensive, I believe the Viessman way is less expensive. Does anyone have any comments or advice??? Input is much appreciated.

I used a Viessmann decoder on C track. Works fine when you program it.

Remember this very well!

When you program the decoder, make sure that the CS2 is set to only the protocol you wish the decoder to respond to.

I pulled my hair out trying to program it so that it can take MM but it only responded to DCC. Later I only set the CS2 to MM and the decoder finally programmed to MM. Once programmed you can set the CS2 back to multi-protocol. This step was not mentioned in the manual.

It has to do with that Viessmann and many other decoders will listen to DCC first and ignore the rest if the protocol has not been set.

Got many years good use out of the decoder.

I appreciate the responses. The unit I saw reviewed had the motor and the decoder in a single slimline package. At the time it was hard to get due to number of orders pending for same. My reason for asking about the Viesmann is to save the on the Marklin costs and apparently the Viesmann unit is almost half the price and even better. Witzlerh if you were talking about the Marklin manual I have found very little is mentioned in Marlin manuals!

I believe this is the motor you are talking about. I did a review on it some time ago:

It is available from MSL:

Currently not available from the factory:

Hi
I tried using 4554 Viessman units for switches. Was fun and less expensive than Marklin but they all died within less than a year. So now it is only Marklin with separate decoder. The Viessman units were also very noisy.
Kind regards

Jean

The manual I was referring to was the Viesmann manual. I have the 4554 as well as the switch decoder. The Viesmann manual is rather good actually but missing that step about limiting protocol while programming the decoders.
