The practice is what you shall do.
I suggest you try check in the youtube,by write weathering train models.
You can also check Humrol and Modelmates,by write products name.
I use base cote or matt cote mix some thinner,to brush on the train models.
When it dries about 30-45 minutes,i start to weathering color powder.
The best base ground of dirt color are dark earth,black,rust and white.
Be careful with the white powder,thus they are strong brightness up!!
The most important to focus train models,is to make body dirt matt and the underframe to dirt.
When you are happy with the results,make finish dirt by use spray matt varnish.
Don´t use to much matt varnish!!
