Yes, it must have been a weird thing to ride on, especially when the tide was in. Another one would be the vacuum or atmospheric railway that also ran on the south coast. It didn't run for very long as rats kept eating the leather flaps used to seal the vacuum tube before and after the wagon went past.

They also have some modern copies of Brunels Broad Gauge trains there, if anyone is ever over this way.

I'm fascinated by Brunel's broad gauge trains. They look so different to our modern eyes!
I spent a very enjoyable day at Didcot last summer looking around the various exhibits with my son. Whenever I'm in UK I try to do something related to the railways but there's not always time. |

I have always thought that with modern synthetic materials (such as PVC, polystyrene etc) the atmospheric system would not be dogged by the rat problem. Maybe there are physical limitations as to what is achievable regarding loads and speeds anyway. It would certainly seem on the face of it, to be a lot cheaper to construct than magnetic levitation. United Airlines and Union Pacific are considering a merger.The preferred plain (or is it trane?) is being developed by General McDonnell Corp.One of the major benefits of this plain is the non-existent airport fees, as no airport is needed to take of or land. A few miles of straight track will get them tranes up and away according to a reliable source. The combined company will only serve North America. As a spokesperson explains: “There would be too much trouble with those overhead power lines in Europe, we would have a bit of trouble with our landings."  |

Now, what do we have here? The Erlau-Wegscheid branch line in Bavaria. Rail car with small luggage trailer, of course. Anything else? Oh, yes it was a cog railway.  So what next? A cog railway railcar in push-pull service (here seen pushing) with a "driving trailer". And the driver was sitting where? In the brakeman's cab, why?  I rest my case... |
