Hello!

I've got two questions about the "silberlinge" coaches. First, was there ever a version of the 4042 with "painted" window frames that the first 24cm cars had. At least I've never seen this kind of version of the car for sale. I've got this kind of version of the 4043 and would like get a matching partner for it. And also, what's the difference between the 4077 and 4081 cars, I've looked at pictures but haven't noticed any difference.

Thank you for your help.

Mikko

According to Koll's there never was a 4042 with painted windows and 4081 has lights changing with the direction while 4077 has no light change. Early versions of 4081 don't have UIC numbers, but all versions of 4077 have.

Hello Mikko,

The difference between the 4077 and the 4081 is:
the 4081 has automatic changeover of the Lights from white to red.
As for the 4043 I do not think that there is a matching Partner since it was made as 4043/1 painted frames (Dortmund-Essen), as 4043/2 and 4043/3 (Stuttgart-Ulm) which would mate with 4083.

Hello!

So then how is the 4046? Does that one have lights changing with direction? I'm pretty sure there's a version of it with painted window frames, right? Seems weird to me that Märklin never made a version of the 4042 with painted window frames.

Thank you, Mikko

Hello Mikko,

this is not really "odd". All cars until 1963 had painted window frames. Beginning in 1964 this was changed to separate windows with silver linings. 4043 came out in 1963. 4042 came out in 1966. It would therefore have been rather funny for Märklin to bring out a brand new car with old fashioned windows.

Nobody at that time wasted thoughts on whether these cars would fit together perfectly at the windows or just so so. They simply combined them.

Regards,

Johann
I like M-track and my things that run on it were built between 1959 and 1972.

Hello Johann!

Thank you for the information. The dates you provided are really helpful. I haven't known specific years so far since I have no Koll's or other reference book, internet is my only resource along with some old catalogues. What I meant by "odd" is that Märklin only made the 1st/2nd class coach but no 2nd class only coach to begin with. Would seem logical to me to start manufacturing more than one car type of a train and not just one lonely coach type.

BR, Mikko
