Hello All,
Need your expertise please. I just installed two Marklin 74491 mechanism along with two marklin turnout decoders 74460 but I just can't get them to work. Both decoders came with the dip switches pre-programmed ie)2356 & 2367. I would appreciate if someone could please tell me as to how I could make the MS2 talk to the decoders. I couldn't quite follow the instructions that came with the turnout decoder hence the query. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Shelton,

I would start with checking your addresses on the decoders, code them to something easy that makes sense, lowest numbers available are best. Make sure they are properly connected to the motors with the green wire closest to the mounting screw on the plug end, and also very important, your red and brown 60113 wires are properly connected to the track.

1- Red wire must be connected to the B terminal, Brown to the 0 terminal.

2- Start with low address numbers for your turnout decoders, for example 1 & 2,

#1 coded - 2 3 - 5 - 7 - 9 10 in the on position, and #2 coded - 2 3 - 5 - 7 - - 10 on (10 being 0 on the dip switches)

3. Make sure your accessory protocol in Mobile Station main menu is set to MM (DCC can not be used with the 74460)

4. Release the all stop, press turnout key, select your address, use the middle keys to control the turnouts.

Hope that gets them working for you.

Gordon

Hi Gordon,
Thanks for your response. All connections from the motor to the decoder and to the tracks are in order. The accessory protocol on my MS2 is set to MM.
I am a bit confused in assigning a address to the pre-programmed dip switches. I am not sure what item 4. Of you mail refers too hence could you please elaborate.
Thanks.... Shelton

Hi Shelton,

I have feeling your problem is most likely with the setting of the addresses on the decoders dip switches. Märklin makes no mention of a pre-programmed address in the 74460 manual, that is not to say they are not set to something that may work, but one of the numbers you mentioned 2-3-5-6 is not a valid address setting and 2-3-6-7 on, would correspond to address #40.

I highly recommend choosing low numbers for easy access with the MS2, as previously mentioned, addresses one and two would be a great start.

Get a toothpick or fine screw driver along with some form of magnification to see the switches and numbers clearly on the dip switches.

Also take care to not to touch any of the electrical components on the decoder board and avoid any possible static electricity that may damage the decoder.

Make sure each required number is set to the fully on position. Use the addresses I suggested or any of the 256 available in the manual. Know that the on position is set by pushing away from the number indicated on the switch, to the top.

When looking at the address chart columns in the manual disregard the second sets for the keyboard, they do not apply to the MS2.

Step 4. in my previous note refers to the key steps used on the MS2 to activate the turnouts once you have them installed and are good to go.

Hi Gordon,
Thanks for the clarification. 2356 should actually read 2357 which was a typo error. Sorry for using the wrong terminology by mentioning pre- programmed..... I should have said default address instead.
Yes, I have been making a mistake with setting of the address. Now that it is quite clear to me, I will give it another go and revert the outcome.
Thanks again..... Shelton
