Hi all,

I want to ask you all how are your wife, girlfriend, mom etc. supporting your hobby and how interested they are in this wonderful hobby and Märklin?

Choose only one. I vote for "She does not support my hobby, no interest in MRR". BigGrin

Cheers,
Janne

I voted "She does not support my hobby, no interest in MRR." Strictly speaking this is not true as such now, because I'm now living on my own. My wife left just on 4 years ago, and when she was with me, that was her attitude.

I voted "She supports my hobby, but is not very interested". No quite true, because she does ask me from time to time how the layout is going (we don't live together). I should add that Milady does like travelling by train.

Yes, she support, but do not have that interest... Maybe once, not more than twice a year, she plays around...

Interesting vote!

My wife always asks me why you always buy the black-red locomotives looking not different ? LOL

The only one she is interested in is blue KBSB. BVI STEINACH

I have to drag my wife into the garage but she likes what she sees and the only train of interest to her is the ICE train.

My wife always loves to sarcastically comment when I buy another steam train- " haven't you already got one of those?"

To which I reply- "no dear this is such and such......."

and she mutters....... "oh they all look the same to me"!! and sometimes in a more stern voice- "what are you going to sell off to pay for this one?"

But generally she loves them, especially when she sees how much enjoyment it gives the children and of course the BIG child (ME)!! LOL LOL

My wife is supportive. We have an old 1925 house (in Canada that is old) so space is at a premium and the railroad takes up one of the two finished basement rooms. I also get the comments such as "Let me guess; it is black and red" when boxes arrive.

On the 'etc' version...

My brother started an N gauge layout and his wife also bought into the idea.
She's quite into arty-crafty stuff and has a wonderful collection of cloth dolls that she's made herself. These are dolls like elves, fairies and other various fantasy types.

She described her layout idea to me, which I won't elaborate on too much, but it's based around an elf/fairy wonderland in a sort of bushland setting.
The train itself is yet to be assembled; but from what she was saying, it will end up being a mix of off-beat era 1 type carriages. You know, they need to look 'fantastic' at some level.

So here's a woman that's interested, if for completely different reasons. She nags my brother for the same reasons as the others...Flapper

She also went along with us to the Brisbane train show this year and really loved it.

Hi everybody,

I've voted "She supports my hobby, but is not very interested".
Well my wife is not interested at all in MRR neither in trains - they all look the same BigGrin .

But she helps me finding train shops, and sometimes brings me back some wagons and locos... ThumpUp

But she really enjoys romantic scenery on my layout.
And especially that part - hoping I will not alter the topic with my pics:

Best regards
Joël

I am very fortunate to have a wife that is very supportive of my MRR hobby. When we visit a model train shop, I am the one who has to be the 'hand-brake' and tell her that we cannot afford to buy all the locos and wagons etc that she likes. She does not remember what we have purchased and tries to persuade me to buy more locos than I want. She is often the best sales person in the shop!

She does not enjoy the bench-work, wiring etc of the layout but loves doing scenery with me and has a more artistic eye than I have.

I am fortunate that my wife's support makes MRR a family hobby shared by both of us. She also encourages our grand-children to get involved whenever possible.

As with Mike R, I am lucky that my wife supports me 100% - and ends up doing all the scenery work, and general planning with "what building/tree goes where" on the layout!
this is great as I'm not much into the scenery aspect - i am happy to do the track planning, wiring, and of course the operating/shunting!!...
Looking forward now to 2014, as this will be the start of being a "full time" pensioner...and as we have recently moved, and have had to start afresh with the layout, there is indeed MUCH to do for me and my wife in the years ahead...

Mine is very supportive although not participating very often , she approves of my indulgences & I approve of her indulgent collection of porcelain cats which have been brought on our overseas tours . On our first European trip when we were at "M" & I was buying a few [ many] items she commented that she thought I would have spent much more . I replied that we would have to make a few trips in coming years to satisfy that idea . We visited Eurospoor in 2011 & she spent the whole time with me looking & buying trains for 2 days , SWMBO actually spent more than I did when she spied a King Ludwig complete set & decided that it was a essential to buy. She then spied a Neuschwanstein castle at one dealer & this was also brought, carried round Germany for the next 2 weeks & then back to OZ with no damage occurring considering that it was fully built . With a new house & a new layout in the offering soon I know she will be assisting me in scenery & building kits while I do the hard work .Retirement comes in 8 months so it will be all guns to have a working layout before xmas next year.

Cheers
Tom in Oz.

Thanks to all so far from answers. As I already wrote before I vote for "She does not support my hobby, no interest in MRR". Anyway this is as she does not build layout, plan layout, build any models or do the scenery work. But our family has been visiting sometimes in Finnish Railway Museum and also many times per year to see museum steam locomotive running near our place.

She also thinks that all of my locomotives except some very colorful ones look similar to each other. She even said that "Thomas" (36120) looks better than many other locomotives LOL . But she maybe see they differently who knows? We have an big scale American plastic battery train with sounds from year 1986, which I bought to our sons. She even see it as more fine looking than H0 Märklin locomotives Wink . She has not seen my Märklin 1 gauge diesels as they are hidden below my layout on their straight around 1 meter "test track". Maybe she will fall in love to them later, when she finds out that I have them Love .

Most important to me is that she gives me time to this wonderful hobby and I give her some own time. We have three sons, so they take also much of our time (mostly her though RollEyes ).

Cheers,
Janne

Responded N° 2 ...

My wife prefers N scale ... miniaturization seems to fascinate her.

But, I suspect that as my other HO and O collections are very quickly taking up precious spatial resources around the apartment she naturally favors SMALL ... ;P This of course goes against common wisdom, at least concerning other "hobbies" where bigger is always supposed to be better ...

Sexual innuendo aside, I always wondered why so few women were involved in model railroading (Zora la rousse here as a sure exception) ... even posted a question to that effect here before, to which no one responded and for which I am incapable of finding a link with the search function ... so be it :/

A few interesting lines appear on this subject with a quick Google search:

Anne Diamond

The day I ask my wife to paint a backdrop for my dream layout (she's a painter), I assume she will be a lot more involved ... nagging and all ;P
The key for anyone to take interest in any endeavor seems to be the degree of involvement ... makes sense to me.

Y ThumpUp

PS: She also comes back from the mailbox with parcels and says : " Hey, I thought you said that was the last one ... " ;P

I voted "very interested", but "very supportive" is a better answer.
Mrs Kelly completely tolerates my interest in all things Märklin, and has a good eye for several things:
  • "pretty" locomotives i.e. special colour schemes etc... I confess I like the "pretty" locos as well...Blushing
  • small details for the future layout, like a Christmas scene we've just bought some figures for.

Mrs Kelly will be in charge of layout "details"!

I, too, have a wife that is very supportive of this hobby. Although she has quite the collection of Märklin Z, she still enjoys the HO equipment as well. Our local shops sometimes have to be "off-limits"; especially during Christmas.

I voted she supports my hobby, but not very interested.

However she does appreciate the work I put into it and admire the outcome and sometimes have fun playing a little bit with the trains.

She does think it's a good hobby that requires lots of different skills and creativity and praises me for the work I am doing and sometimes I will ask her for advise as she has a good artistic eye.

I am generally allowed to do as much pottering in the garage as I want to and normally manage to find an hour or two in the evening after the baby have gone to bedBigGrin

By the way - great poll!

Yum, funny you should ask, image below is the perfect answer to THAT question.....

As for my answer, well it seems I'm in the blessed minority, my wife (Nadine) supports me enthusiastically, she built two of the kits for the project factory layout that we purchased in Sydney, has purchased several items with or for me, comes to the shows, helps out where and when she can and generally hassles me about my putting-off the construction of my next layout. And she will ensure there is room for my 'man-cave' in the redesign of this home or the next home.

My ex-wife was also very supportive, she started getting me the Christmas wagon each year and for some years my oldest daughter (Dawn) has taken that role on and also accompanied me to the Marklin Museum back in 2007. My grandkids all like the trains to some degree or other, especially the two youngest boys, although I guess they may grow out of that as they get older.

Nadine's two teen-girls are also happy to tolerate train rides, exhibitions etc so all in all I'm fortunate.

I inherited the passion from my Dad so his support was a given, but I think to be fair my Mum fell into the 'supports but not really interested' category although when I had to visit the dreaded Willis St Dental Clinic ("The house of pain") as a child, she would usually make my visit bearable by taking me on a train trip to Johnsonville (one of NZ's most under-rated scenic journeys in my opinion) and an Icecream at the end to console me.

Does that all count as generally well-supported?

Supports and interested, as well as my girls... but not as much as me of course. Smile

I give them decision making powers. That helps... they work on the layout with me,
even wiring and we all enjoy sitting around the table some evenings to work on model building.

I try to relax and not put too much pressure... when they see I am not uptight about it,
they join in and "work"....

Good to hear others have family support too!

Thanks for the poll - interesting responses BigGrin

My wife is happy for me to be 'consumed' by MRR - she is a quilter and as such has plenty to do and buy!

I of course have the very cunning argument (I thought Cool ) that as she had been quilting a lot longer than I have been (back) into MRR that I was only 'catching up with her - especially on the purchasing side of things LOL

.....I'm not sure she quite sees it that way BigGrin

LOL. My girlfriend is a quilter too. :)

My girlfriend is supportive, she does not understand much of it, but she likes to see me playing with the trains. Her favourite locomotive is the 01 150, because is has the "cute little black wagon it drags around". She does not like the "red one" (her definition of all era V and VI locomotives, she thinks they are all the same). Oh well... :)

She always buys me train-stuff for my birthday and Christmas. :-) So, she's a keeper! :-)

Ha! Some very funny replies...
I feel sorry for you guys who have a hard time with your spouses because of this hobby.
Even though my wife has no personal interest in trains. ("They all look the same to her"), she DOES support me a great deal; Both materially and spiritually!
The house we bought was specifically prepared for a huge layout in the basement.
For X-mas and B-day presents I have almost carte-blanche; Just give her the #ref and a place where to get it, and miraculously the desired piece will show up sooner or later.
Together we have visited MiWuLa, München (Deutsches Museum), Göppingen (...) and several other model-railroad displays/shows in both Denmark and Spain.
I think she is just happy to be travelling, and it seems like she is also proud to show off the layout at home, to any guests we have.
-Maybe she is also content to know that her husband always stays at home, instead of sitting and drinking in one of the local bars all day... (lol)

Lately, while my model-train activity-level is on a low, she is being equally supportive of my new-found joy in Lego, and we are now doing Lego-exhibitions together all around Spain. (not only visiting, but actively exposing my pieces to the public)

So... IN THAT REGARD (=partner) it has certainly paid off big time, to change culture and life, and move all the way from Denmark to Spain.
On the other hand, life in Spain is currently quite a rotten deal, so I guess one can never get EVERYTHING perfect...

Spain was fine when I came here, so I hope things will get better again soon.
Best regards
