Hi all, a friend of mine has this loco with no box or instructions with it & we don't know its # Number either. It will work only in analog IE: all switches in off position. What has him confused is that it won't operate in digital mode. Has anyone got one of these & can offer some advice before I pull it to pieces & start to convert it to my way of thinking? The second decoder looks to be a Lokpilot. Is this standard marklin issue?

Wow DaveB, that is is quite the set of modifications that loco has received. Scared

I like these kinds of mysteries , so I will give it a go... I would have to say it is the 1997 Insider Loco BR 52. Definitely not factory in looks or electronics. The serial number should tell you what model version it is, which would be prefixed with a M for the Delta 34171 or an H for the HLA 37171.

The decoder combo is an ESU (some sort of LoPi) with what appears to be a Märklin 60960 style function decoder controlling the fans. Maybe try DCC and see if you can get it to respond. I would think the function decoder would be addressed separately (mm), but who knows with this combo, I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to ESU decoders but it should work with Märklin protocol too. Maybe it needs to be reset?

Good luck with it,

Cheers,

Gordon

New paint, new decals, wood "armor plating" and serious modification to the electronics. Someone invested a lot of time in this loko. A .50BMG armour piercing incendiary round from a P-51 BTW wouldn't even notice the "field modification". If it's a loPi V4, loose the Marklin decoder. You can configure the outputs to run the fan speed based on loko speed. Since you have lights and four aux outputs only on the loPi, the decoder will still be good with MM2 format. Depending on the part number, it may not support MFX. It should be fine with DCC.

I put a loSound in mine about a year ago. On mine I cut the last half inch or so off the motherboard so I could salvage Marklin's rear light socket. When parts of the original will work into my plans, I salvage them. Marklin's socket location and secure mounting with a screw on one side and a post on the other can't be duplicated in quality with double face tape.

But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs
ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control.
With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397.

Hello Gordon & Matt,

Many thanks for your replies. Since I do not have the loco in front of me so this we shall call a long distance repair. The owner went through the addresses one by one as I suggested to him & got lucky as the Lokpilot decoder was set to default address "3". He then set the Marklin 6090 type decoder to same or one up & the beast came to life. He is using the old 6021 controller. I was all set to re-plumb the workings of it but he says all work perfectly now with a few extra lights we did not know about. It looks awesome when it is all together & running. Many thanks for your suggestions. It was incidentally sold to him on German E-bay as "damaged not running" & he got it I believe for a song. He had a win on that one all round I believe.

Cheers

Dave...
