In reviewing past posts, it would seem that both the V60 Diesel and 89 0-6-0 Steam engines have mixed reviews. The hobby shop in my area recommends the Diesel over the 0-6-0 as the Diesel has more contact with the track and the 0-6-0 only has a one axle pick-up. Ideally, I would like the engine to run smoothly at a realistically slow speed for a reasonable amount of time before it stops. I would prefer the Steam engine, but would pick the Diesel if it runs significantly better. Will I be happy with Diesel set? If both are going to require a fair amount of maintenance, I would pick the 0-6-0.

Any direction or advice is appreciated!

Hi Jay and welcome to this forum. I have a couple of 0-6-0s and a few V60s and they all run well if they're maintained. By the way, maintenance includes keeping the wheels clean. Also, I suspect that both of these loco types use the same mechanism, so I don't know where this "only has one axle pickup" for the 0-6-0 comes from.

If you'd prefer to see steam at work on your layout, go for the 0-6-0!

I agree, both are 0-6-0 wheel arrangements, I think they should run about the same! Marklin have made a lot of BR89 in all scales over the years, this is a proven design.

Theese small engines run ok, but the larger diesels and electrics with boggies run much better.
