Hi,

Does anyone know what the correct rear lights on US freight trains are (or have been in era III) ? Simply a red lantern, or does it depend on train speed (someone claimed that) ?

The UP caboose 45702 has 2 lights indicated at the roof cabin. It's challenging me to install a red LED here.

Hello,
I believe with that era the UP used a single blinking red lantern in the center of the car's backside. When you say you have two do you mean one on each end? My caboose is about 1000 miles away at the moment so I have no reference!

On each side of the caboose there is a pair of lights between the observation windows of the roof cabin.

Since I have installed ski and mass contact in my UP caboose for cabin light it would be nice also to have rear lights. Blinking lantern is a very interesting info. I'll post a photo when it's ready.

Thanks

Hello,
Here are some examples of what can be found on the American market :
http://www.walthers.com/...lit=30&Submit=Search
http://www.walthers.com/...lit=30&Submit=Search
http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/800-1302
I hope this will be of use.
The other day, I saw a CP Rail crew removing an EOT lantern; it seemed to be simply snaped and was removed in a few seconds.
Pierre.

Thanks, Pierre, for these nice links.

Here comes the caboose with cabin light and red lantern. Only the blinking electronics is still missing.

UserPostedImage

I have made the electric connections from thin copper strips glued to the walls and the bottom of the car and painted everything in the respective color. Lights mounted on a bridge inserted in the roof cabin. No wires hanging around, no drilling and cutting in the car.

Hmm, some Preisers for the cabin, drinking illegal beer... finally US era II + III lives from that image [:I].

Nicely completed. Congratulations.
You can also find caboose interiors in Walthers catalogue as well.
And just for reference, picture of a prototype that I took at Old Sacramento, CA, in 1991 :

Thanks,

thats a really beautiful museum car. The two lights at the roof seem to have different solors (red and green ?). Perhaps they also served not only as rear lights, but also to send signals to the engine.

Could the lower light be plain white to function as "headlight" when the engine+caboose were backing up?

This EOT device looks rather complicated. Seems to have more functions than simply a red rear light. Radio controled, as it looks.

My first idea was that it's for selling parking tickets.

Hi Hans Martin,

The topic was started a while ago, but I just received the August(!) issue of Model Railroader where a Trix/Märklin caboose is revamped, including prototypical marker lights (note that the lights on the cupola have gone in this second version of the caboose; the marker lights are attached at the sides; the article says: "For a train running on the main line in the 1940s-1950s period, UP marker lights displayed red to the rear and green to the sides and front. ... definitive explanation of marker lights ... Fall 2004 edition of the UPHS Streamliner".

AFAIK, EOT`s, "End Of Train Devices" were introduced after the cabooses had become obsolete.
Its main purpose, aside of signalling the end of a train, is triggering the air brake from the back of the train, if problems occur in the train line. The EOT is actuated per radio control.

Regards,
Manfred

Hi Jeroen, Manfred

Many thanks for your posts, very interesting news. Are there pictures from the new caboose design on the web ?

Concerning End of Train devices it is plausible that they have to do something with breaking. I have red that on long freight trains several minutes may pass after triggering the air break until it responds on the last car. This is because of the enormous length of the air pipes.

Hi Jeroen,

Thanks for your effort. I checked my e-mail address in the member profile, but it is right. Also my mailbox seems to work correctly.

But actually, I also failed myself sending me an e-mail via the forum function. So I have now entered my office mail address to the profile. Please try again. Hope that it works now.

Hi Jeroen,

I have now recieved the pictures successfully, thank you very much.
It seems that the Caboose shown there is identical with mine in all details except the lights (and dc axles and couplers). It is very interesting to see all the variants.

Sorry, old thread, for waking you up.

I have just found a very good description of the Caboose lights in http://hgh-esn.ath.cx/index_jsm_moba.htm (it's in German). Look under Umbauten (conversions) -> Märklin -> Caboose

Essentially it is said that there were a red and a green rear light on the caboose. The red light is switched on as end light when the fright train is on the main track. However, the light is switched to green after the freight train has been shifted from the main line to a side track, in order to signal that the following train may pass by.

Regards

Hans Martin

what EOT device? I didn't notice anything about trains on Pierre Gillard's link. my attention was diverted elsewhere. maybe that's also what caused the train crew to loose hold of the EOT blinker. (she doesn't show up every time)

What do the EOT stand for?

Is it turnout motor?

Piere, thanks for posting.

Obviously someone lost this EOT device. How can one loose a EOT device confused Looks as if they are not very careful with theit property, perhaps they lost the whole End Of Train and not only the device, or the whole train ? [:I]Cool
