Hi everyone, I recently started questioning myself: Is it possible to make a DIESEL locomotive exhaust fumes from their exhaust chimney(s).

I think everyone would love such a new feature/possibility on our diesels (I don't have any yetLOL ).

ESU made exactly that. Check the video! :-)

I do not think it looks real, but it is a start.

I've got the ESU Br215 (similar to the Br218 in Søren's video), and i think it looks quite good. As do some fellow Marklin Club members who have seen it, and they are far more qualified than me to know what looks right and what doesn't.

I'm also told that you can get special smoke fluid that smells like diesel smoke (an exhibitor at last year's NZ Railex had some), but I don't know if you can get smoke that turns black under load, and white when not under load.

You know, I have been looking at some videos of the class 218 starting up, and I must admit that the model does come close. I guess I was thinking of another prototype.

I have never heard of that, is it possible for you to get a product name? The question is if you really would want that on your layout. I am not sure I would.

I pretty sure you can't. Smile

The exhibitor gave me a bit of the fluid to try out, but being busy with the show at the time, I never got a real good chance to try it out. He told me that it comes from the US, and a quick Google search reveals that MTH make such a smoke fluid.

Since you posted in "General MRR": ESU do it in H0 gauge, several companies do it in 0 gauge (and maybe for other gauges, too).

And one user here showed a video of a diesel loco he equipped with a standard Seuthe smoke generator.

Yes, it's possible: just drill a hole into the roof and mount a smoke generator.

Tom

I saw a video last week (from a demo of TouchCab I think) with a SteamLok (Märklin1?) that smokes from under the rails...

That seems like a good thing to introduce on a home layout - not ...

I researched a bit more into the matter. Apparently there are several smells offered:

http://www.mthtrains.com/content/60-1051

  • Christmas
  • Coal
  • Diesel
  • Coffee
  • Eggs & Bacon
  • Vanilla
  • Candy Cane
  • Pipe Smoke
  • Cinnamon Roll
  • Apple Pie
  • Barbeque (Hamburgers & Hot Dogs)
  • Wood Burning (Hickory)

If you do not like diesel, there is always christmas and apple pie... Glare

Roco have done a Br10 in H0 with smoke coming from the loco clyinders, but you are most likely referring to KM1 who have a feature called Dynamic Smoke on some of their 1 Gauge locos.

Why not? It would add to weathering authenticity with black smoke being deposited everywhere, just like the real thing.
