Hello All,

Was messaging with John, and mentioned that I recently acquired a Brawa 6102 Trolleybus set.
He mentioned that his was running with AC. I don't know which model number he has.

I assumed it ran on DC, but when I tried running on it DC it ran too quickly, it seemed to me.
So perhaps I should try it with an AC trafo... but I am worried about burning it out.

The other question I have is about tight corners. How tight can you reasonably make the corners with the catenary?

Any experience or suggestions?
Thanks
Mark

FYI
I have been looking at number of Trolleybus youtube videos and pages.
Here is the best of what I've found the last couple of weeks.

The above link starts with a really beautiful video of a trolley running on an Italian train, tram and trolley layout.
Great bit of jazzy 50s music too.

Interesting links, thanks! ThumpUp

I am running my Eheim/Brawa trolleybuses with a HAG transformer built for AC operation. No problems at all.

However, you should take care not to run one single trolleybus for a very long time because if the motor gets too warm (especially the old Marklin-style motors in those buses which were produced in the 1950's and early 1960's) then there is a danger that the side walls of the body and the roofs start to warp.

Thanks for the tip on overheating Unholz,
We were hoping to get this going for a train show.
I wanted to make a stop at a station and in a tunnel... on a very small kidney oval.

As for the AC, I am going to try it again today with a Marklin 10va blue trafo.
BTW Have you had any problems with tight corners?

Mark, yes - tight corners can indeed lead to "derailing" of the pickup arms (or then the bus hangs itself up). And if you position the catenary masts on the outside of the curve, a too fast trolleybus can hit the pole.

But generally the system is very reliable - and also quite "cat proof" (one of my cats loves to rub her head on a catenary pole OhMyGod ).

Mark,

the brawa trolley bus I've got is AC and at one stage I tried to convert it to digital and ruined the motor.
regarding the running characteristics are concerned, the can be a bit temperamental and to fix it its all in the 2 arms.
if your wires aren't apart enough it will go from side to side but changing the angle of the arms could be more damaging than helping you.
the speed shouldn't be a major problem but slow speed isn't available.
I've written to Brawa and asked them how can one convert it to digital but never received an answer.
I got a new AC motor but I wonder how one can convert it,.
I had in mind to add head lights, braking lights, indicators, interior lights and as you said bring it back to a normal speed or low speed.
Sorry I can't help you more but if you have any more questions please ask and I see what I can come up with.

Mark, yes the wires are good, mine are over 30 years old and have been through the mill but haven't tarnished at all. I would not recommend to bend them unless the curve is very sharp (360mm minimum) by not bending them they form a natural curve for both wires.
I'll have a look and see what my catalogue number is as I still have the boxes and I think I've got the instructions as well.

regarding a Brawa section, why not, there are many things Brawa used to make, e.g. signals and unfortunately I've ruined about 10 of them by blowing the led's, I connected them with wrong polarity and in those days they only put a resistor onto the ground wire and by switching the polarity I've blown them., they don't make signals any more,

I let you know what my number is on the box.

anybody had ever tried to digitalize them I asked Brawa but never received an answer.

regards.,

John
