Hi all, so, here is the question: can a decoder be "half" dead ?

1.- i have a glaskasten with a delta unit for DC motors, it worked at first with my MS2, but then it just stop moving, no lights also.
With the CS2 back i have tried to make it work, but nothing. With all the DIP's in off it just works fine in analog, but no way to make it work in digital.

2.- A loco converted with a lokpilot M4, was recognized by the CS2 and worked fine, then, it just stop work also, again, it work fine in analog, disabling mfx on the CS2 i can make it work in MM2, but it dont work either in DCC. tried to reset the decoder with the CS2 feature, but no results. It would be no problem to leave it as MM2 but when i reengage mfx on the CS2 it did not work. I have tried to disable mfx on the decoder with CV47 but it does not work.
Dont know really if the communication between the unit and loco is good enough, i have had some problems programming a new adress in MM2, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

Anything else that could be done to make them work again?
Regards
Francisco

Hi Francisco,

Just like your stories, I have experience similar situation. But this happen on mSD. It started with a loud noise, tat-tat-tet-tat-tet something like that (and now I know, that's the sign something really bad happen on the decoder, it's a sound of screaming decoder BigGrin), then decoder are never recognized anymore by CS2 or MS2. The loco can only be recognized under DCC, without sound but light is okay, and it can run too. The running characteristic is also not very good, turn the speed knob a little, but the loco jumping to fast speed. And decoder are getting hot if I run the loco for more than 5 minutes. I already did many troubleshooting, resetting CS2/MS2, disabling mfx, and etc, but no result. When the loud noise happen, I press the stop button on CS2 very quickly, just a second after I heard the noise. So, I guess, the decoder are half dead. Decoder are not working anymore under mfx and MM2 protocol, only under DCC, and with limited function available.

Another time, I got this problem again on my other mSD, but I was too late, 3 or 4 seconds after I heard the noise, I pressed the stop button, and the decoder are blown Crying, I can see that the black plastic covered the mSD (it was mSD from 6096x series) are melt. So if you heard that loud noise, then it is a really bad sign.

Greetings,
Sony

Hi Sony, i had a similar problem with a mLD, wich was not recognized by the CS2, but disabling mfx on the CS2, doing a reset under DCC, and making mfx on again in the CS2, solved the problem!!

Can it be half dead? Why not?

I have one MFX with that kind of problem that lately decided to work. Just a note regarding #2 I don't know if the lokpilotM4 is improved in this respect to lokpilotM3. The M3 I have, I bought because I wanted mfx but only realised after installing it that it is not DCC compatible.

The ESU V4 M4 supports DCC, SX, MM and mfx, so it was improved.

I once bought a loco with Delta decoder that was working in analogue mode only. So yes, half dead can happen.
mfx is a different story: if the transmitter on the decoder dies (a common problem with early mfx decoders) the decoder can no longer register with the controller. It will still work in analogue mode and also in MM mode if there is no mfx in the controller.

Tom

Well, it seems that i will stop braking my head trying to fix the locos....so 2 new decoders added to the wish list...
Anyboby needs a delta unit just for analog and/or a LP M4 that works only on MM2?BigGrin
