Hi all

After receipt of the most recent Marklin PA1 & coach set “Montreal Limited” (26495) i took notice of the different colours used for the loco bogies and stream liner coach bogies. Both locos have bogies painted with a bright silver colour, which match the lower part of the locos. The coaches have grey bogies which does not match the bright silver colour of the lower coach trim panels.

The previous set being the “Bluebird (26490) was supplied with the loco bogies in dark grey and the lower trim panels in blue. The coaches have bright silver bogies and these match the lower trim panels of the coaches.

Then I looked at the Union Pacific PA1 (37610 + 49610). These locos have the same colours for both bogies and lower trim panels, being light grey. With these I use a set of Santa Fe coaches (43601 to 43604) which have bright silver coach trim panels and light grey bogies.

Was the use of colour a “free for all” affair, or was their set standard with the prototypes? Secondly are the Marklin models prototypically correct in term of colours? Personally I prefer the bright silver bogies.

Hi Marius,

It was a free for all, and it depended on the road that placed the order with Alco.
In years subsequent to delivery, paint colours on bogies may have changed due to shopping and motor repairs.
Passenger car bogies were subject to the same vagaries.
I must say that I have noticed predominantly silver bogies on PA photos. I have not been able to obtain a photo of the Delaware and Hudson PA series, and in any case that would confirm the colour only on the day of the photo.

regards
Kimball

Hi Kimball, Marius, All

On this day they were indeed silver:

Alco PA

as they appear to be in most of the photos I have seen of the D&H PA's and the Baldwins.
