Anyone bought the new Piko steamer Baureihe 01 in East German Reko version with Boxspok wheels?
Productcode 50406 is for the Maerklin AC system.
Current price around Euro 170.-
I love the looks of it.
Having no experience with Piko,i wonder whether it radiates quality and "good feeling".

Thanks,
Paul.

Piko has made some very nice looking engines lately. They seem to have a couple of lines of different quality. I think by looking at the photo that 01 would seem to be the product of an older mould with some of the details being too thick or big for today's standard. The red part of the wheels look like unpainted plastic which again does not appeal to me. I could be wrong but have a closer look at good close ups before spending money. Then again it is not a commonmodel and I'm sure some people will ignore that kind of details just to have an example.

Hi Paul,

I've seen Piko's BR 01 Reko at the shop and yes, these parts also slightly disappointed me.

On the picture from Frits Osterhun's website you can see how it looks on the close up. It's not the model you refer, but I think the mould is the same, may be with exception of some smaller details.

At the same time I admit that the prototype is nice and unique (I also especially like 50406), may be I'll go for it one day.

Best regards, Andrey

Thanks Andrey,

We all agree it does not come close to Maerklin but it still makes an interesting model for the money.
Current price for the 50406 is some Euro 170.-,i think with some time lapse that will go down further on internet.
The 50406 is the model having the oil tender.

On the picture you submitted it shows drivewheels with a centernut, very ugly.
The 50406 has small round hubs in the drivewheels,Maerklin style.

Will sleep over it another night.
Currently bidding on my second 01 streamlined steamer.

Cheers,
Paul.

That's the version of Piko's BR 01.5 (01 503) which I own myself. Detailing is on the stand of Märklin's classic BR 03. Okay, there are more plastic parts. But overall impression isn't bad for a 1970s mould.

Current versions perform nicely on the layout, running very smoothly. Pre-1990 batches however came with a loud and "rough" motor.

Florian,

There is no need to drive it.
I will use it as a static display.
I might also settle for a Maerklin 3310 to fill its place in the cupboard.
