I'm interested to get a Bachmann Unit from the Thomas the Tank engine and convert it to Marklin,

Did anyone do something like that?

If yes i need advise before spending money and doing it wrong.

If possible Digital for CS2

Electric locos are easier to convert to AC if you use the overhead system as a powersupply, however steam locos or for that matter any Märklin loco needs a pickup shoe and this where the problem could lie.
a conversion is easy regarding the wiring all you have to do is combine the 2 wires (left-right track contact) but than you have to find room for the slider to solder it onto the now free soldering pad.
if you also use flicker free led's or bulbs your circuit board has to be altered as well but this is most the time easy by interrupting the earth connection (track) from the circuit board - lights

Something I have been wanting to do for ages too.

Thanks John, almost sounds too simple. What about the AC vs DC?

If you are converting the loco with a digital decoder, the decoder will automatically detect whether ii is being controlled by a digital controller or by an analog AC transformer, and adjust to suit. The decoder can also directly drive a DC motor. If you don't use a digital decoder, then you will need some form of AC reversing unit, and a method of converting AC to DC to drive the DC motor in the loco (diodes can be used).

Personally, I would go with the decoder option. An ESU Lokpilot costs about 25 - 30 euro.

I converted the Bachmann "Emily" to run on Marklin 3 rail. It work however I wouldn't do it again, the Bachmann Loco was one to light and second could not pass over the switches 100% without problems. However I was able to use Hornby's Thomas Locos. I found them used and inexpensive on ebay. I also realized I need to use the smallest slider to prevent the same problem I had going over the switches. I have the Hornby "Gordon and James" running on their own loop without switches until I find a smaller slider.

This link is the test run of the Bachmann conversion.

This link is the Hornby Conversions.

Hope this helps

Tim
