Hello all,

I got for free this modified 3366 DRG E 52 Grey locomotive from my favorite seller ThumpUp . There even came an certificate with it that it was modified and limited quantity (number of made) of only 5... Yeah right Smile . Anyway I would like to know what are these electric parts inside of this loco as I have not seen these kind of parts before? There is a permanent magnet in it´s motor and it runs in analog mode and has slider / pick-up shoe under it. There is that "mystic black box" and some other electrics in place of normal manual reversing unit / direction changer. I will put maybe a new analog DCM motor and manual reversing unit back as this looks strange. I have these spare parts (new motor and reversing unit) removed from a new analog locomotive that was converted to digital.

This 3366 loco is normally green with red wheels and DB BR 152 and not this kind of "modified" model. Lokshow Märklin 3366 BR 152 link

Here is two photos of it:

Thanks from any info about these parts in advance!

Janne

Hi Janne,

That looks like the Hamo electrics for DC running. Are there any other power pick ups on the wheels.
Perhaps the previous owner ran DC on 3 rail track?

Cheers,
Brian.

You say "runs in analog mode". Was that AC or DC? The circuit board in the middle has diodes that will rectify (turn AC into DC) voltage. That they are there makes sense because of the permanent magnet making the motor DC only. The black box is probably a double pole double throw relay used to swap the polarity to the motor back and forth for forward and reverse running. The only thing I can't tell is how they maintain the relay's position for direction change. The old E-unit maintains the switch postition after state change without power being applied. The only relay that would do this is a dual coil latching relay.

But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs
ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control.
With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397.

Thanks from answers! There are not any current pick ups on the wheels.

Matt, it runs in analog AC (normal Märklin transformer). Thanks from explanation of these parts. So in my use I will next convert it back to normal Märklin analog AC with new DCM motor and new mechanic reversing unit. I will do it now. ThumpUp I will keep all parts from this loco, so they can be used later if needed. This motor with permanent magnet can be used like it is now if I only put an ESU LokPilot 4 decoder to it. Maybe later then. But I will convert it to analog AC today.

Cheers,
Janne

I have converted this loco today to analog AC. Nice one and best of all totally priceless! ThumpUp

That permanent magnet looks different than 5-pole DCM digital motor magnet. I think that it may be useless in digital use. Or if I use it in digital some day then with 3-pole anchor like it was now.

I was not very happy with the quality how I was soldering those wires. But it works now and will not be opened for a long time so I don't have to see those wires for long time Smile . I did maintenance to the motor and gears at the same time. Cleaned them and lubricated. It runs smooth now.

Cheers,
Janne
