Are there any replacement lightbulbs for a rear-end boxcar that is brand new and runs better at a higher (digital) voltage? I wish to replace the higher-wattage lightbulb with a lower-wattage to run in conventional operation. Also, I have a few newer digital engines that the headlights and taillights are very dim in and require a lower-wattage bulb to show-up better in conventional operation. Do you know of a dealer that carries the "older" conventional lightbulbs, and will they work in a digital engine?

also, has anyone replaced "old" style filament bulbs with LEDs? should be possible, but would it also require some resistors to step down voltage? would probably need a new mount fabricated too.
I can see a day when it will become very difficult to locate the old filament type bulbs for train lighting.

As far as I know all LED's require a resistor in series in order to limit the amount of current passing through the LED. The value of the reisitor will vary depending on the voltage applied to the LED and how many LED's are connected in series.

In book #3 from Rutger Frieberg he explains common principles of the LED's.

In general the following chart should be of help in selecting resistor values in order to limit the current to the LED.

Volts for DC operation
6________680 ohm resistor
12_______1.0 Kohm resistor
18_______1.8 Kohm resistor
24_______2.2 Kohm resistor
30_______2.7 Kohm resistor
40_______3.9 Kohm resistor

For AC voltages a rectifying diode should also be placed in series in the circuit.

Volts for AC operation
6________330 ohm resistor
12_______470 ohm resistor
18_______820 ohm resistor
24_______1.0 Kohm resistor
30_______1.5 Kohm resistor
40_______2.0 Kohm resistor
