The only two livestock vans that I can identify are the Altona type, Marklin 4888; and those longer 46161 types. I have a set of three Piko Altona wagons
There's a green older Era I wagon in the 45230(?) pack. I've been looking out for them for my branch line stuff.
Joes is splitting the 46097 sets, so you can get the longer wagon for about 23eur on its own.

Arlo, thats for the thoughts but the 4888 and the 46161 are set up as Sheep or pig type wagons, small doors and a floor. I have 2 of each with livestock, now somefing for the beasties.
PS Who is Joe?

Joachim Diez - Lackylok Frickenhausen. Joes

Yeah, I figured that about the cattle. I've only been looking at Era 1 &2. Anything from Marklin and Trix that I have seen with pigs or cattle included have been high-sided open cars, like coal cars.
One of the 'Geislingersteige' sets has pigs (I think) in an open car. Horse transports are generally closed cars.

We may actually be looking for something that never existed...

Goodo then. I was going to suggest an American version. I don't think European cattle producers ship(ped) livestock around in the same bulk way that the US and Australia do.

Hi Nev,

The American style livestock cars like in 45690 are readily available from US manufacturers such as Athearn, Atlas, Bachmann etc.
But the problem is that they do not come with an NEM coupler pocket for you to run them with your Marklin stuff.
Unless you fitted one/two of your NEM equipped stock with a Kadee coupler, just to couple to the livestock car.

regards
Kimball
HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge.

I noticed in the old Markin handbook that it shows a cow being pulled out from a box car. It seems that one might be used if there is enough ventilation perhaps as Marklin model 4627.

It is common in Germany and Europe for Cattle cars to be high Sided Open topped wagons.

In the US and Australia they are usually slatted high side open topped wagons with a walkway for the attendant to keep an eye on the cattle .

I would say that it would very much depend on which Era your layout is showing. For Era IV, V and VI I would say that the following pictures show how to transport cattle, pigs and sheep:

Djurtransport 1

The reason being that no farmer has a rail siding and it makes more sense to have the cattle picked up at the farm and driven directly to the slaughter house:

Djurtransport 2

In my mind, the picture in the old Märklin handbook shows the situation in late Era II or early Era III, where a farmer would send cattle by train and would most likely have had the cattle group, perhaps four to six cows, walk to the nearest station (or possibly loaded a few cows onto a trailer pulled by a tractor)

As a side remark, I have seen a box car, at the French National Railway museum in Mulhouse ( http://www.citedutrain.com/ ), which for wartime use hade the marking "Hommes 40" and "Chevaux 8", meaning that it could carry either 40 men or 8 horses. To my recollection that was an ordinary box car without any ventilation than the ordinary ones. On the other hand if it could load 8 horses it could equally well take 8 cows.

Finally, even if it is not for cattle transport, I give you this link showing how to modify a Swedish box car for troop transport as I have understood they could be equipped immediately after WWII, with two levels and wood burning stoves.
