Time for some end-of-week relaxation. For those of you lagging behind in another time zone, well what can I say, except to take comfort that when (most of us) are back at work on Monday, you'll still be enjoying Sunday!!

OK, on it goes.

Many moons ago, I copied this article from Model Railroader Magazine April 1993 - published exactly 20 years ago!!

I used to have it as a display article when we (the MMRC) attended shows and exhibitions and it was frequently browsed by passers-by.

Some of you may have seen it back then but if not, enjoy it now. Apologies for the poor quality scan of a copy... (and if anyone happens to have this original magazine and can scan me a better example that would be great).

** Just found an online version of it here - http://www.sodor-island.net/behindthescenes.html (scroll down partway to find it)

Much the same information is also on this following website which I just checked....

http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/family/how-thomas-the-tank-engine-works2.htm

Hope you enjoy

Thanks Steve,

The website link says:
"To create the characters of Thomas, Henry, Percy, Gordon, and the gang, model-makers start with Marklin model train chassis and then modify the bodies ........
Models are constructed entirely from scratch by a team of three full-time model makers and two part-time freelancers, working under the art director. Actual movement of the locomotives along the tracks is by conventional two-rail electrification using standard Marklin equipment."

It would make it clearer if they used the term "the body shells" instead of "models".

The Thomas series on TV certainly captivated a generation. I remember as a teenager in the 50s, reading from the little hardbound books to my little brothers. They were captivated too. My local library had every one of them.

I assume Marklin never had recourse to promote themselves as the REAL Thomas!!!

regards
Kimball

Me, too.
We looked at it, a lot, on TV when the kids were small, and the FD bought all the VHS tapes she could find.
Just a few days ago I saw it again, on one of the many TV channels. I still anjoy it a lot, and the FD and I have many times asked each other regarding the gauge and layout size.
Now we know!
