My original 5106 has an additional "cube" which is soldered to the right of the 3rd rail, as can be seen in the attached photo.
Recently I have received a 5100 with feeder wires (aka 5103) which is missing that addition. Should the lack of it be a concern?

Hi Eli,

The original one has a capacitor for RF interference suppression. This was done to minimise interference to radios and TV sets in the vicinity of the layout. The recent addition does not have it, but this is of no concern, as most locomotives have their own interference suppression built in. In fact, the capacitor can sometimes get in the way of digital signals and has to be removed when operating with some systems.

I'm not so sure about 'sometimes', Marklin always recommend that you remove the capacitors for use with digital systems.

Well, this is a vintage (can I call a 70's set "vintage"?) track set and I am not going to contaminate it with anything digital anyway :)

As long as you don't have RF interference with your radio or TV set (and you shouldn't with modern equipment that are made according to the recent EM standards), don't bother with the problem on analog circuits.
